I posted a Craigslist ad over a month ago looking to find a place to hunt as well as help a farmer that has deer and hogs tearing up their crops. I had almost forgot about it but got an email this evening from a guy saying he has hogs tearing up his pasture and asked if I was interested. Heck yeah, I'm interested! I've got to meet him and scout out the land, but I think I finally have a place to hunt. I know with deer and some other types of game there are restrictions on magazine capacity. I didn't see that for hogs. Can I hunt with a 30 round mag in my AR? I plan on taking my AR and having my .357 magnum on me for backup. I plan on hunting very early in the morning. I understand they have very good hearing. I've never field dressed or processed a hog so I'll welcome any tips on that. I'll do some online research on processing them over the next couple days. Any other tips for a successful hunt for me? If I can help him with his hog problem I'm hoping he might allow me to hunt other game on his property.

There are no magazine restrictions for hogs. Only deer, and only in .22 caliber. You can have a 30 round mag in any caliber other than .22
FYI, hogs have poor vision but great hearing and smell.
They aren't like a deer, where if they detect you, they will hesitate before bolting.
Wild hogs bolt at the first instance of human smell.

Pigs are tough to kill with a pistol. Head shots are a gimme, but one can't look at a hog the same way they do a deer.
Hog vitals are lower and further forward than a deer.

I was on a hog hunt a couple of years ago where a guy dumped his .44 mag on a hog, and it ran off.

The hog was later found with dogs and upon the field dressing found a couple of bullets lodged on the gristle plate that all hogs have.

Google wild hog anatomy and you'll see what I'm talking about.

watch being in the woods with that AR during deer archery season........Do some checking on that and make sure its legal Im not sure

Thanks for the info, Dennis.

Donovan, I didn't see anything on the ODWC site about my specific situation, but it says you can hunt hogs with a rifle on WMA land during deer archery season if they allow rifle hunting on that land. I assume I would be legal on private land.

During archery season, can I hunt for hogs on a WMA with a .30-06 for hogs?

If the WMA has an open season that allows a .30-06 as a legal firearm, then yes you can. If that particular WMA is open only to archery deer hunting, then you would be restricted to hunting hogs with a bow and arrow.

I do believe you must have the appropriate tag for that season on your person.

Control your scent and noise....Hogs don't see very well, but they can smell and hear very well, and aim behind the ear for a for sure quick kill, after that, game on....They can be hard to hunt as they do move around alot...What I'm saying is they won't stay in one place very long, night time and early early morning is best. If you have access to NVG that makes for a good time...They also like corn, mixed with snow cone syrup, poor mans hog candy...Good luck they are fun to hunt...

I have hunted hog for the last ten years in several states. You can call the game warden and get permission to do what ever you want on private land ( night dogs) as long as the land owner is good with it. On public Land You must have a hunting license and tag for the season. No 30 round clips seven max on public land. any question I can explane more call 918-798-3208.
There are right about the sent. Also pigs don't keep the same routine like deer it's all about food water and air temp. No sweet glands so if its hot find the water you will find the pigs. They are loud when feeding, so listen to hear them, pay attention to the wind and stock.

Do these look like hog tracks? The landowner sent these to me this evening.

Met up with the landowner this evening and spent an hour with him walking around his property. It's 25 acres. Has two ravines that flow water after rain. Lots of cover around the ravines. There's a big pond about 200 yards across his property line. Hogs and deer have quite a bit of cover on his property and even more on the property surrounding it and water nearby so that's good. Didn't see any hog tracks, but I did see a couple areas where something has been bedding down and nibbling on weeds in that area. Saw a couple deer tracks. Saw LOTS of places where hogs have been digging their snouts in the ground to dig up grubs and such. They looked really fresh in one certain area, probably in the last day or two. There are definitely hogs there!

As we were walking and chatting I looked across as the property north of his and saw a big ol' deer about two hundred yards away. Couldn't see if it had a rack on it, but it was pretty good sized. This wasn't a little fawn by any means. It kept an eye on us for several minutes.

I'm probably going to head out there Monday morning well before dawn and sit myself about 100 yards away from where I saw the bedding area and the spots where the hogs have been digging in the ground. There's a little ridge there where I can go prone and have at em. Hopefully I get some good action!

Good luck! I'm deer hunting on McAlester Army Ammunition Depot for the next three days. We scouted today, and start the hunt in the morning. We found a pond with fresh hog wallows, and lots of fresh rooting. Maybe we will get lucky, and get both.

Just get a feeder and corn and set it up esp if you can put it on a timer for a standard time for you to be there
