Ok, someone explain this to me.... What are the general equipment rules? I see USPSA multigun is a scoped 308 rifle, semi 12 gauge, and a major limited 10 pistol. Is that pretty much what most outlaw matches are doing? Also, is it 1-shot A/C to neutralize or 1-shot anywhere with the rifle? Any different scoring with the pistol?

Not all matches recognize HM optics, but the rules you posted are the gist of it.  The pistol may still have to be a 45 though. Did you buy another gun?

HM is jacked! Every match is different. The rocky mountain folks seem to be using the most historic set of rules and uspsa has the most up to date set.
Lol no...thats all I need. It's just come up in conversation a few times and I think I saw a few people shooting at DTR. Just curious really.
Yep that seems to be the case.
Not in tradional HM. HM tactical is an off shoot that allows optics.

HM optic/tactical is an offshoot division for people not manly enough for irons and a pump shotgun. I don't even think most matches recognize it.

You can shoot whatever you want. The division you're in is just what is written next to your name. At the local match Ivan be competitive with just about any kit.

I haven't stuck my foot in my mouth in quite awhile so I'm due.
My biggest gripe about 3gun in general lately is that we have "outlaw" matches. It makes it a bit difficult to try and figure out gear when not every match uses the same rule book.
USPSA has put out a new set of rules for clubs to try. Some are and some aren't. Which annoys me, but that's the way of things.
I love the .308 rifle but I loathe the .45ACP. The shotgun part pretty much comes down to loading. Yes a semi is faster but it's still a loading contest.
I've never been a big .223 fan. No real reason it's a great round with a proven track record, but if the fit hits the shan I will be grinnin wide with my .308s.
I wish they would lift the .45ACP requirement and go to a PF min requirement in both HM divisons. If I'm making 180PF with a .40, then I should be gtg. Instead I get to make 165PF with a powder puff .45ACP load that my wife would giggle at when shooting.

If you want to stir up a hornets nest go ahead and start bad mouthing the so called "outlaw" matches.
If you want to know the rules, you need to read. Its not hard to stay on top of them, even though Jesse says "they're jacked" they aren't what causes the confusion is that there are several outshoots of HM, but they each have thier own name and ruleset. It really takes about 5 minutes to read the equipment requirements for a match, and since you are spending your hard earned money for the match it only stands to reason you should know what you're spending your money on.
If you loathe the 45 then don't shoot HM, if you don't agree with the 45 requirement over PF then don't shoot HM, if you don't like a particular matches rules then don't shoot that match. If you only like the USPSA ruleset, then you will be able to shoot one good match a year!!!!
If you're only in it for the "fun" then it doesn't matter what you shoot, just go shoot.

I think Trapr is right on the money with his "get out and just shoot", and "know the rules" messages.
As to the topic at hand. Seems like for the most part if you're running .308 with irons and a .45 it's HM Limited or just plain HM at most places. Like Trapr said outside of like 1 match an optic on the rifle puts you in Limited/Tactical.
Scoring: I'm crunching some numbers as we speak with regards to which is best with the 1 A neutralizes. My splits aren't bad, but obviously no where near what a .223 will do. I think it's a combo of target presentation and stage breakdown. If it's a hoser array you may be better off getting 2 A's. If they are farther away or the smaller rifle targets it maybe better to shoot 1 A and move on.
Trapr can speak to what we did at HPSC, I thought it worked well. There were several stages that it made things a lot easier to shoot 1 to allow the mag change in the right spot. Obviously if there isn't a 1A neutralizes then there isn't anything to sort out.
As reference what would folks think should be considered poor, good and great split times for .308 and .223 A's at say 25-30yrds? How much does an optic vs. irons play in all this also?
