Ok, I am trying to decide on a configuration for my AR-15 that I will be happy with, and leave it with. My ideal arrangement would be to have two ARs, one set up for close range, one for medium to long range. However I currently have just the one AR. The primary use for it is medium range shooting and hunting it currently has a decent albiet cheap scope, a Pentax 4-12 Gameseeker.

I cannot afford a Nightforce or other high quality AND price optic. I have owned a Leupold and was happy with it, and some of the cheaper ones are in my price range. I like the idea behind the MK AR scopes, and also the Nikon M223 scopes, but would like to hear from someone with experience with either of them. I like a reticle that can be used to get me on target at longer ranges. Not talking about Bullseye accurate, just half minute of coyote, quick and easily.

Also trying to decide between an AFG, or a bipod of some sorts. Just for an idea, here is my AR, with plenty of scope rings cause they were laying around, and I figured why not.

The gun shoots very well. Around 3/4 of an inch with factory ammo. This gun pulls double duty as a "house gun" I have shot practical rifle matches with it, and I don't feel hampered at all by having the scope as opposed to a "faster" sight. The flashlight is mainly on it when its on the rack at home.

Buy that DMS-1 and ADM mount out of the classifieds. That's a hell of a deal. 1-4x scopes are good at just about everything.

Oh, specs, it's a Rock River A4 1-9 twist barrel mid length gas system. I wish I had gotten a faster twist barrel, but you live and learn.

I'd get a scope you like for medium to long range shots and put a doctor style sight on a 45* mount for the close up yotes. I've been looking at the Jpoint for mine. It has a "wake up" feature that turns on when it moves. No more forgetting to turn it on and not having a dot. Also won't kill the battery when you forget to turn it off.

Ok, sent a pm on the Millet, thanks for the heads up. That would make this perfect for my idea of a close to mid range gun.

A big scope like that and the vfg/light setup dont go together. Get a 1-4 scope, a long ff tube so you can get your hand out there for support, put the light on the side of the tube, and youre there.

Thanks so far guys, and yeah the VFG and light have been gone for a long time, I had taken the red dot off, and mounted the scope but not much else in that photo. The gun has scope only as of late since it's primary role has been a coyote gun. Care to suggest a tube that won't break the bank?

The YHM Diamond is what I have on mine, it's relatively heavy, but it's sturdy enough for me and cheap as far as decent rails go.

After looking around, I really like the magpul MOE handgaurd. I also like the price, lol. It has the ability to mount the couple of things I would need on it as well.

If you are torn between a VFG and a bipod, you could always get a grip pod, I'm sure you know this but a grip pod is a VFG that has metal legs that come out when you press a button, giving you a bi pod

vfg's are gay.

Mike, stop hiding your feelings. LOL

I keep trying different VFGs to find one I like, but so far nothing. I end up having a few fingers on the VFG but the rest of my hand grasping the stock itself. So I will probably try out the MOE, and maybe add a stub grip. I think I like it more as a hand stop than anything else.

Don't listen to Mike, he doesn't even like ARs. :)

VFGs ARE gay btw.

What more could the magpul moe handguard do that you haven't done by adding picatinny sections to the original already? All you need to do is move the flashlight to the side.

If this is something that you plan on carrying on coyote or other extended hunts, then try to keep the weight down.

I'm assuming that buckle you have attached to the lower is for a sling? If not then a sling would be a wise investment.

I like the option to mount a light on the sides, which the MOE has. If I keep my existing handgaurd I will probably drop the rail altogether. That would leave me with no way the mount a light unless I go with a 45 degree rail off of my gas block, which is doable, but I kinda want to put a set of BUIS on it soon as well.

I dunno, I am just tired of tossing stuff on and off the gun and not being happy with the outcome. I like the way this may turn out so far. The optic and mount I should be getting soon are almost exactly want I wanted for my close to mid range setup, now just trying to decide on the rest.

Usualy when I hunt I drop the light off of it, so that a game warden doesn't get the wrong idea. From what I have seen the MOE is lighter than most tubes or rail setups, and I don't need rails. just rail segments.

Id say go with a high dollar match grade 18-20" barrel. That will be good for 600 yards plus with match ammo. There is no need for two guns really. If you want to shoot small groups at long range get a good repeatable GQ mount like a LaRue with a high powered scope of your likings then get a Eotech with a QD mount for close stuff. Or you could do like us 3 gun shooters do and shoot 1-4X or 1-6X optics at all ranges.

I had an AFG and it wasn't so great. About the only reason I could find to need one is a front stop when pushing up against a wall or barricade. That reason is definitely not enough of a reason to waste money on one. Plus they add uneeded weight to the front of the gun. Do like Mike said and get your hand out as far as you can on yrou free floated handguard. It will speed up your transitions. I run a 15" carbon fiber FF tube for that reason. Well that and I have ape like long arms.

I have a Harris Biped and I like it a lot. I have shot under 1moa at 300 with it prone and I can't do that without it. I have the LaRue QD mount because it only goes on when its needed because its heavy.

You should come check out the Rifle match this Saturday at USSA or on February 20th at OKCGC. That will allow you to check out the practical rifles that we use. They are not all tacticool like the Urban Operators use but they are fast and serve the same purpose that you will likely have when you start shooting matches with us. ;)

Well, I do have a second reason for wanting another AR. The wife wants one to use when we go coyote hunting. I will probably get/build a second one at some point with a 18" barrel, with a fast twist. I would probably put a 3-9 or 4-12 of some sort. Something that would work for hunting, but also for shooting p-dogs or whatever.

As far as the matches go, I don't even own a shotgun at the moment, but before my buddy Jesse joined the Army we shot the PRM matches at Oil Capitol whenever we could. (he was the guy running the Garand if you were ever there) We always got a kick out of the people we would beat. He was shooting an antique, and I had one of those 3-9 compact scopes made by NCstar. I'm not an arrogant person, nor do I go to competitions just to see who I can beat, but smoking people who had more money on their gun than I have in all of my weapons combined is kinda fun.

I'm honestly not going into this to make my gun "look cool" just trying to make it more well rounded and useful.
