I want to buy my niece (and maybe myself) some ear-muff hearing protection now that she's getting into shooting.
Do you'all have any favorites/recommendations?
Do any of you use muffs plus ear-plugs---or?

Where would you buy muffs-----online? or your local store?
Your favorite online shops/local shops?

JB in the Upstate.

(pondering setting up a little private range in our ravine...)

I bought a set of the electronic muffs at Wally World
I took them out of the package and when I went to put them on the band broke in the middle.
They went right back for a refund.

I have a noticeable hearing loss from working around heavy equipment and shooting.
Standing in front of the big speaker at rock concerts probably didn't help either.
In my opinion have her use foam plugs and muffs.

Hot or not, I prefer the ear muffs. I have two sets of electronic Caldwells from Midway that cancel out the gunfire very well. The single use foam type make my inner ear itch after a few hours. Could it be that Chinese foam?

I personally use muffs or ear plugs, not both. My muffs are one standard cheapo pair and one Silencio electronic pair. I have two sets of Silencio plugs, my all around favorites. Can't use the muffs with rifles though. My nephew's head is too small for my muffs but my plugs work in his ears. The throw away plugs are too big for them.
Both muffs were gifts, I bought the plugs online at Natchez SS on closeout.

Chili
Maybe they put itching powder in there as a joke.

I have never found a pair of ear plugs that I considered comfortable.

I use the electronic muffs and recommend that young shooters use the best hearing protection their folks can afford. Loud music, machinery and guns have taken their toll even with hearing protection for the "really good stuff" :D .

Buy yourself a set of peltor electronic muffs and it will be the last thing you ever buy. They are not cheap but peltor stands behind their product. When I was an instructor in the coast guard we used them. Out of 150 sets we bought I think I sent one back for repair and they ended up just sending a new one to us. We used them everyday for 5 years and only one broke. Students love them cause they can here everything but it muffles out the shot perfectly.

Agreed! After a friend let me use his which amplified talk but canceled out noice I was hooked!

I've seen them from 30-400 bucks. Walker makes some that reduce by 24-25 db and amplify normal sound 9 times. Just depends on features you want.

Wow, that's a WIDE range!

I was surprised as well. The cheaper models are Cabelas brand. I do a lot of business with them, I keep an account open. I've never had issues with any of their products. Good place and their stores are awesome.
