I'm looking for clarification on the handgun laws in South Carolina. I've always assumed I had to be 21 to purchase a handgun, but was recently told that since I'm over the age of 18, I can purchase one from an individual. I can't find any official legislation or anything like that which says anything about the age requirement to purchase a handgun from an individual, but I assume someone here can help me out.

Thanks in advance!

Thank you, I appreciate it.

Now time to find out what I actually want to buy...

CAREFUL!! An 18 year old can buy a handgun from another state resident, but NOT from a dealer. Federal law prohibits transfer of a handgun to anyone under the age of 21.

So if its at a store, you'll need mom or dad to buy it then sell/gift it to you. That's perfectly legal.

Also - 18 USC ? 922(b)(1) prohibits sale of handgun ammunition to those under 21. So your folks will have to buy the ammo too.
