Had to Kill a Chicken Thief today

Shot my first Coyote today. He has come around at least 5 times that I know of. The first time was when I saw buzzards out my window one Sunday about a month ago. A fox had go one of my free range chickens, which attracted the buzzards. When I went out with my pistol to try to shoot the fox the coyote ran up from my left. He was attracted by the buzzards. Next 2 times I saw him I could not get a shot. My wife saw him yesterday but the dog scared him off before she got a gun. I set up a ground blind today behind my shop at the edge of the yard. In the afternoon the chickens like to scratch in the ferns behind the back yard. He has been coming in from the left side of the property where the woods are closest to the yard. I saw him out the left side window of the blind and waited till he got in front so I could get a good shot. He popped his head up the see where the rooster was he was stalking and I shot him in the neck with my 10/22 with a 3x9x40 scope on it. Hit the jugular vein, wind pipe and lodged in the spine. The only thing he could move till he died was his head.

A friend of my son who is majoring in Criminal Justice at USC wants him for a class she is taking. So I told her she could have it minus the tail.
 
With a .22lr, the shot placement is critical. Looks like a good kill. If you do a lot of pest control on your land a .17 HMR might be useful. Or a suppressed .223/5.56 :twisted:
 
I always have mixed feelings about varmint killing. I understand that you need to protect your chickens, but the Coyote is a nice looking animal too. I guess I'd feel differently if they were MY chickens :-) Too bad you can't eat Coyote.

I saw someone wound (not kill) a Yote once, and it howled and howled and howled until a follow up shot was placed on it's head. They're so much like dogs, if I shot it and didn't kill it, my wife would kill ME, as much of a dog lover as she is. Common sense would tell her it's a predator and it needs to go, but when it starts doing the "hurt puppy" thing...she'd lose it.

I don't normally hunt varmints. If I don't eat it I don't hunt it, but I do have to keep my chickens safe. We have a fox who has taken more chickens than anything else. My mistake the first time I saw it was to fire a warning shot and not kill it.

Coyotes are another matter. The ones we have here are bigger than the ones out west, and they are breeding with dogs. In some other states the populations are so large that they are running in packs like wolves. There are several videos on Youtube showing two coyote's bringing down a full grown deer. There is one on a hunting forum I am a member of a six point buck being killed by two in the upstate. The coyote does not just hunt in the forest. They are also living and hunting in cities. They kill deer, dogs and cats. They will also stalk and kill people, especially children. I found this about coyote attacks in the Chicago area.

Coyotes have become prevalent up here in the Socialist Republic of Moscowchusetts...

I believe it is becoming a significat problem these days. No predators, limited hunting areas, they are thriving even in city areas now. We even have foxes roaming the streets here feeding on cats! More civies will be attacked by them in the days that come- at least y'all can cope with this in your own fashion!!! :?
