As a community we don't police our own very well

It's not that so much as those of us who try are labeled "not pro-gun enough."

The mindset among the hardliners is that everyone who isn't already on their team is a rabid anti-gun extremist who hates freedom and is impossible to persuade otherwise. They assume that people who say "hey maybe open-carrying your AK-47 everywhere isn't such a great idea, chief" are quislings or some elephant dung.

People who open carry are like vegetarians. Open Carry Advocates are like PETA.

I'm on Starbucks side, and agree they just took a neutral stance, and it backfired on them.

If they had put on their website, "we need OC folks to demonstrate in our shops", then that would be another thing, but they didn't.

Had the casual OC person wandered in and got a cup of java, there would not be this issue.

Open carry is kind of a statement from legislators of support, but it's better to be just a face in the crowd. On the other hand if you have 20 people in a crowded place with side arms, are you security watching the place or just a schmuck showing his piece. Might be a deterrent or you may be mobbed by anti gunners like a gaggle of crows finding an owl.

I couldn't agree more. Everytime I see one of the open carry video on you tube or facebook part of me dies a little. While I support the idea of open carry I personally think you have to be smart about it. While the cop stopping you might be a technical legal issue, arguing with him/her, filiming it and the sticking it on the internet doesn't make you a 2nd Amendment Crusader, it makes you kind of look like a horse's ass and puts a bad light on the rest of the firearm's community.

I think there is a difference in open carry and openly brandishing your weapon. I don't know the laws in other states, but I would figure if you are going to carry long guns openly they would have to be secured in such a way as not to be considered brandishing or intent to use it. The facebook pictures I saw showed these folks openly pawing their long guns in public. What makes them different than hand guns? I mean if I unholster my pistol without proper cause, then it becomes a crime right?
