Planning to go with a new cowboy shooter on Saturday morning; he is shopping for a cowboy shotgun. Interesting to see whether all of that rimfire ammo that has not been on the shelves may turn up on tables.

Always watching for deals on reloading components, but not holding my breath.

I don't think I'm going to go to another "show" any time soon after today. Decent crowd. But no real "deals" to speak of. I can find better prices at local gun shops and retailers any day of the week. I would think these shows were ment to move inventory. Most dealers not looking to budge on the panic prices any time soon. The jewelry cleaner guy looked to be doing better than usual though.

I went Saturday afternoon. There were bargains to be had but you had to really look for them. I found a guy in the back who had .22 magnum ammo. I think he was the only one who had any. I told him I would buy all he had for a better price. I bought seven boxes which was all he had. Bargaining and bulk sales get you the wee bit better pricing. Now I don't have to be concerned with finding .22 mag ammo for awhile.

I went late Saturday. It was kind of a last minute decision to go. I didn't see any deals I would call amazing but then I long ago gave up expecting to at gun shows. I had my little one with me. He's 11 and this is his first gun show in SC. One thing I do like is that I often get to see at least something at these shows that interests me. Unfortunately I usually can't afford it. This show was no different.

I saw some Lugers which I would love to get my hands on one. I saw a ton of Garands at way better prices than I am used to seeing back in NY. I've long wanted a Luger in my collection but I just can't swing it yet. Unless someone wants to trade one for an AR-10 LOL. I saw a couple semi-auto Thompsons which I have seen before but I still find interesting. The coolest firearm I saw at this show was a 1940's Johnson 30-06. I have never actually seen one in person before and that was a nice treat to me to actually get to put my hands on one. Unfortunately at just short of 7 grand for an asking price... I won't be bringing one home anytime soon. Still it was something to see.

One thing that always gets me is the knife displays you see at gun shows. I am a knife person to some extent so that always interests me. There seems to always be three types of knife displays at gun shows. The most predominant, and I saw at least three or four at this show, are really what I think of as junk knives. The buy one for $10 get two for $15 type of thing. From there we jump stright to the high end custom knives. There just doesn't seem to be a lot, if any, of the better (but not super expensive) production knives at shows. I was actually tempted by a couple of these but I just can't justify spending that kind of money on a knife I can't really use right now. Then the third kind is the bayonet/vintage military knives. There's usually several of these often at displays also selling vintage firearms. Again I almost went for a WW2 M4 Carbine bayonet. Again though I just couldn't justify $150 for it right now.

I am amazed at the state of some things. For example SKS's that used to go for $125 now being priced anywhere between $500-600 for example. It makes me wish I bought a truckload of them ten years ago. Really the nice thing about these shows isn't that they have great deals. I think those days are long gone but what they do is bring together a lot of retailers in one place so you can get an idea what they have to offer without visiting each one individually. You may see some that you might want to take the time to visit and see more later though.

Optics are a lot like knives. I saw more fake lookalike ACOGs, Aimpoints and Eotechs than I think I have ever seen before. Also I swear NCstar is paying promotional fees to be shown so predominantly at these shows. There were some good stuff too but wow there was a lot of NCstar stuff.

In the end I did end up picking up a little Ruger 10/22 I also couldn't afford but honestly it was a bit of an annoying experience and if I hadn't had my little one with me who kind of wanted me to get it I likely would have driven over to PSA or Academy and bought it there.

Thanks for taking the time to write that post. Next best thing to actually making it to the show (which I did not).

Speaking of knives, one small custom knifemaker I found at a previous show was Ex-File Knives out of NC (if I recall). He makes his knives from - you guessed it - files.

Making knives from old or broken files used to be a lot more common, it's still not unheard of. They are basically 1095 steel which is the same high carbon steel knives have been made of for ages. It's not stainless so it's not as popular today but even so a lot are still made of it. Kabars for example.

Bigfutz, If you ever wanna let that bad boy go let me know. Cash or trade!

I went Saturday with one goal in mind. To find a Ruger SR 7.62 rifle under $1700.00. Ther was one single rifle at the show priced at $1799.00 plus tax. After a little dickering I walked out with it for $1674.00 plus tax. I could have gotten one off Gunbroker a little cheaper, but time you figure shipping and transfer fee I am happy with my purchase. Plus I got to handle it before I bought it. Ruger really did a great job on this rifle. Can't wait to get it to the range.

Are you kidding? Had I made it to the GS myself, I would have been looking for another. I did email him to see if he had any distributors... One of our sponsors would be wise to pick up this line.

Check it out:
