Green Mountain rifle barrels

Not in many many moons, but once upon a time there was no better muzzle loader barrel to be had. The 5.56 specs look to be worth a try.

My uncle bought one in 6.8 and 5.56. Both seemed pretty nice, but we didn't shoot for groups. We had just finished building the uppers and we were checking function shooting steel at 300. I think they might manufacture barrels for Keis (Kies?). Not 100% on that though.

That would be the Knight MK-85. I bought mine from Tony Knight when he was building them in his back yard shop. Green mountain barrel that he guaranteed 1 1/2" groups at 100 yds for the life of the barrel.

Lot's of good barrels out there that don't cost you $350 for a blank! just got my McGowen barrel together on my AR and I have to say I can't blame my rifle if I'm not hitting, shot many DPMS barrel's a few Shaw and Wilson barrels. Later,

I wasn't aware of what it takes to pin on a front sight base until I researched it tonight. Don't have the fixture, reamers or mill to do it. How much does having a FSB pinned cost?

Yankee Hill makes a screw on front sight and gas block combo. Around $70 bucks or so. Or you could put on a low profile
gas block and mount sight on the picatinny rail. That's what I did to mine. There are lots of combinations depending on
what you are going to do with the rifle. Iron sights or scope. You can put both if want and they make an offset iron set too. You can also buy barrels with the front sight and gas block already on them too. The AR-15 platform has lots of options as you will see.

not really reliable for any kind of consistent accuracy.

Anytime you rest you handguard on a barricade, bench, sandbag, bipod, whatever.....your p.o.a. will shift because the free float tube moves indepently of the barrel. When the sights are mounted on the receiver & barrel the relationship doesn't change when the handguard is pressed by resting it on the barricade etc. This is the reason you should never rest your barrel on the barricade when shooting....it throws off your p.o.i. by shifting the sight alignment. The back up sights for mounting on the rail are really just that......back up.

I don't want to mount a front sight on the rail. I like the look of an A2 AR-15 and that's what I'm going for on this one. Tony's example is another reason why I don't want the front sight on an irons rifle to be mounted to the rail. My next build will be a 3 gun rifle, probably with offset irons and a 1-4x optic. I wouldn't mind the front sight being mounted to the rail for that rifle as it'd be used only for quick target acquisition at very close ranges. I'm very set on a FSB being pinned to the barrel for this one. Might hunt down an A2 stripped upper before assembling this one as I'd rather not have a detachable carry handle on a flattop upper. Been looking but haven't found much.

I'll keep my eyes peeled for a deal on a 20" A2 profile barrel with the FSB already pinned on. Haven't seen any in stock that were reasonably priced.

JP makes a clamp on A2 FSB.

Armalite used to make one too.

Also I believe there are some set screw variants out there.

Barrel is ordered. Also ordered a surplus A2 stripped upper, BCM BCG and all the bits I need to finish this rifle except for the front sight. I think I found a FSB for an A2 upper, but need to confirm. Most I find are F marked. Once I get all the parts, who can pin on the FSB for me? Can any gunsmith do it?

The low profile gas block is mounted to the barrel and the picatinny rail is integral with the gas block, so has nothing to do with the
free float barrel. The gas block and picatinny rail are one piece so unless you rest the barrel itself on something it won't affect the
accuracy.

Ahh now I get you. The gas block your talking about is a railed gas block. The "low pro" blocks are the small ones made to fit under the handguard.

Yes, railed gas block and the only problem is if you use a plastic sight like a Magpul you aren't supposed to put it on
the block because the heat will melt it. So you need a real iron sight.
