This! Innovative Arms 5.56mm suppressor

It's a thread-on suppressor, which some people aren't fond of, but I like it. It's got wrench flats so you can make sure it's snug. I've had the WAR upper receiver for a while and now I can finally test out it's true purpose. I'll fire a few rounds on unsuppressed mode then switch it to see if it reduces felt recoil and the sound level like it's supposed to.

It should be nice and warm tomorrow so hopefully I can get some rounds through it before it rains.

Thread-On. I think I was editing my post when you typed this to answer that very question.

Innovative doesn't have a QD mount yet. I don't mind the thread on. It saves a few ounces, a tiny bit more quiet in theory, and I've read a ton of problems about QD mounts wearing out over time.

The original Innovative Arms Grunt 5.56 can had an extra baffle; Phillip removed one, and it got a few decibels more quiet and a slightly deeper tone. I didn't see the numbers or data, but Innovative says the Grunt 5.56 can registered 3-4 decibels under the AAC M4-2000. Just another reason for me to buy local.

I also have a .22 suppressor that went pending in November. I went with the aluminum model Innovative offers, but in doing research, it seems the aluminum .22 baffles are a pain to clean, whereas stainless steel baffles can be soaked in vinegar and hydrogen peroxide and dried off, spotless. I asked about swapping the aluminum core on mine for a stainless one, provided the tube specs were the same, and Phillip said I was the first one to ask about doing that, and it would be no problem. There will be a slight upgrade charge because the steel is more costly than aluminum, but totally worth it. Great company to deal with.

I wasn't aware of potential wearing of a QD mount, to even think about the extra weight, or that there might be a dB difference.

David, I'll be going to a local range about 15 minutes from my house tomorrow.

Mike, you're welcome to shoot it when we meet up next. It makes the 5.56 sound like a .22 with a little more bass.

Griff: The debate between thread on vs quick detach is one of those never ending ones, like 9mm vs .45acp. If you search on a website like AR15/M4Carbine, you'll get more "QD is the way to go" answers. Sniper's Hide will yield more "thread on". Just do your research and see what works best for you and your comfort level.

My opinion: It takes about 3 seconds to screw the can onto threads, so whats not "quick" about that? People say when you take off a QD suppressor, you have a flash hider/brake underneath rather than a bare muzzle. I have a linear compensator that doesn't need to be indexed, so I can screw that onto the threads in place of the can. And after shooting for a while, NO ONE is removing a can, QD or thread on, til that thing cools off, so theres nothing "quick" about either. With the thread-on, I don't need a box of QD adapters for different rifles (which cost upwards of $100 apiece). I don't have to worry about increased POI shift for precision shooting. People will say thread-on cans will back off and become loose; I check mine periodically but if you put it on hand tight like you mean it...it will be fine. I shoot my thread on pistol can a lot with 0 problems. You can google about AAC mounts loosening and wobbling...no thanks. I'll stick with thread on for now, even with an AR type rifle.

You should try and get some video of shooting it unsuppressed and suppressed. It'd be interesting to hear the actual difference. If you have time of course.

I will take a little tripod and film the next time I shoot but I don't know if the microphones in standard digital cameras are good enough to adequately capture the sound but I'll give it a shot. No pun intended.

I know it may sound strange but the videos my wife and I do with her new I-pad come out quite amazing. Wait, let me clarify that :shock: . The videos we take of our son come out wondereful...sound and picture quality. Much much better than our digital camera.

I'll bring it next time we go out and see (and hear) how it turns out. One small caveat: The new I-pad is pink, really pink.

Since I was shooting alone, I'd be curious if a bystander could hear a difference with the WAR in suppressed mode vs unsuppressed.

The problem with using a normal video camera/phone/etc is that they auto-level the sound.
Without an actual decibel sensor, the audio from the video would be skewed. There might be an audio app on the iphone to measure dB's though, don't know how accurate it would be.

The dB meter at my wife's work (science lab) only measures up to 120dB You could get an accurate suppressed .22lr reading from it but that's about it.

The camera may give you an idea of the change in pitch at least with the WAR...worth a shot.
