Glock Upgrades for USPSA Competition

First off, upgrading your gun isn’t the thing that's going to make you successful. There are tons of guys with badass competition guns that don't practice who get their butts kicked regularly by guys that shoot stock guns and practice all the time. Practice is the real factor to success, but having a better tool for the job never hurts. If you want to invest in setting up your pistol for competition, here are some things to consider:

Limited vs. Production

Both of these divisions are fun and have their different challenges. Limited is faster and more fluid. Production requires more reloads and the mastery of near-stock equipment. All 9mm guns are more competitive in production than limited. Since most people who compete in limited are using major power factor guns, you are at a distinct disadvantage in limited with a 9mm. In production, everyone is scored minor power factor regardless of caliber. You can shoot minor PF limited, but a better Glock setup in limited would be a Glock 35 or Glock 24, to give yourself the best chance you can to succeed.

Glock Upgrades in Order of Importance

-Sights
-Trigger Connector(comes stock on 34 and 35) and a polishing job
-Trigger Over-Travel Stop
-Grip
-Extended Mag Release
-Recoil assembly
-Standard slide stop(comes standard on everything except 34 and 35)
-Magazine well(for Limited division only)
-Additional trigger work

Recommended Parts

Sights: Most shooters prefer a fiber-optic front sight to help you find the sight quickly on close targets, and a plain rear sight. Both of these sight sets are fantastic. I use the warren sights personally, but the Taran Tactical sights are essentially clones of the Warren sights with a more high-tech wear resistant finish. http://www.makereadyproshop.com/tti-ultimate-fiber-optic-sights-set-for-glock/

Adjustable sights are another nice option, but the generally sit higher up off the slide, so I don’t like them as much. They’re also more expensive Here’s a good set if you decide you want to go that route: http://www.makereadyproshop.com/dawson-precision-competition-sight-set-glock/

Trigger Connector: A good connector and a heavy polishing job will do quite a bit for your trigger pull. There are dozens of options for reduced weight trigger connectors for Glocks. Most of them probably work fine, but I’ll link the connectors that I’ve used and had good luck with. Note: The Glock 34 and 35 both come from the factory with reduced weight trigger connectors that give a crisp 4lb pull. That connector works great and is one of the ones I’m listing below. The lone wolf connector is the better deal for the money if you’re upgrading a 17.

http://www.glockmeister.com/45-Pound-Stock-Connector/productinfo/G721/

Over-Travel Stop: Putting in an over-travel stop reduces the distance you have to let out on the trigger after the shot breaks before it resets so you can pull it back to the wall. This directly translates to faster follow-up shots. It’s a cheap and effective upgrade.

http://www.lonewolfdist.com/Detail.aspx?PROD=1024 This link is for 9mm

Grip: Upgrading the grip surface of your gun will do wonders for your stability. The better grip you have on the gun, the less it moves in your hands which means less sight movement. For a low cost option, you can buy 3M grip tape at Lowes(made for putting on patio steps and stuff) and cut out panels yourself. Pre-cut panels are also available and aren’t expensive. For a more permanent option, you can opt to have your grip stippled with a hot iron, but you have to be careful to make sure that you apply stippling only within the allowed areas or you will turn your glock into a limited-only gun.

Extended Mag Release: This comes stock on the 34 and 35. Reloads are a huge part of competition, especially in production division. This part is $4 and makes it way easier to hit the mag release consistently.

Slide Stop: The standard Glock slide stop is great. I’ve found the extended slide stop that comes on the G34 and G35 to be a gigantic pain in the ass. If you have a 34 or 35, you can get the standard stop here:
http://www.lonewolfdist.com/Detail.aspx?PROD=461&TERM=glock%20slide%20stop

Recoil Assembly: Guns come from the factory with springs that will stand up to +P and +P+ loads. Replacing your recoil spring with a lighter one, more suited to the light loads we shoot in competition will make your slide cycle faster and make your sights dip less as the slide slams into battery. You can try different weights to see what feels best to you. I usually run a 13lb spring, but some go as low as 11lb. Factory Glock 9mm guns come with a 17lb spring. The other benefit of an aftermarket recoil assembly is added weight in the front of the gun which some say improves the tracking of the gun. I don’t know that most people could tell the difference, but I personally run stainless steel guide rods in all my glocks.

Guide Rod for Gen 3 Glocks: http://jagerproducts.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=35&products_id=94

Gen 4 Guide rod adapter(Lets you use normal glock guide rods and springs instead of the ridiculous recoil assembly that comes in the gen 4's)

http://www.makereadyproshop.com/tti-guide-rod-adapter-for-glock-gen-4-pistols/

Recoil Springs - this is based on your load and how fast you want the gun to cycle. I like to run a 13lb spring in 9mm and a 15lb spring in .40.
http://www.makereadyproshop.com/ismi-reduced-power-recoil-spring-for-glock/

Magazine Well(Limited Division Only): This is a huge perk of limited division. It makes the gun more forgiving on reloads, but also adds weight and forces your hand high into the gun when you draw.

Dawson ICE Heavy - Gen 1-3
https://dawsonprecision.com/magwell-glock-gen-1-3-ice-heavy-brass-by-dawson-precision/

Gen 4
https://dawsonprecision.com/magwell-glock-gen-4-brass-by-dawson-precision/
This is a new option that's heavier than the dawson ICE and very reasonably priced.

Additional Trigger Work: You can get your Glock trigger down to less than 3lbs with lots of tinkering and with about $150 in trigger parts. The downside of a super light Glock trigger is that the triggers tend to get mushy and lose their crispness when they get light because of all the integral safeties in the trigger system. If you’re interested in how to do this on your own, ask me about it and we can talk about parts. For about the same money you would spend, you can buy some really nice trigger kits, just make sure the kit you order is legal for the division you want to shoot(production is picky).

Production Legal:

Limited Division:
http://glocktriggers.com/products/edge/

Magazine Extensions for Limited: You can run 140mm long magazines in limited, so glocks can hold up to 21+1 in 40 caliber and 23+1 in 9mm.

Taran Tactical- These have the most capacity and are really nice and everybody seems to be using them right now. I haven't used them personally, but TTI stuff is generally pretty badass gear:
http://www.makereadyproshop.com/tti-glock-firepower-base-pad-kit/

Arredondo - These work perfectly and feel great to reload, but only hold 18(you can jam a 19th in, but it's hard as hell to reload that w in 40 and 21 in 9mm, and you have to use a special tool to remove them for cleaning. It’s easy to do, just don’t lose the tool.
http://www.lonewolfdist.com/Detail.aspx?PROD=718016

Glock Magazines - These are like flashlights and pocket knives. you can never have enough. You'll want at least 5 mags for production division, and at least 3 full length(140mm) ones for limited, with 4 being better. Factory Glock magazines run flawlessly. If you clean them, you will never have to deal with a magazine problem. I've been using the same 5 magazines for over five seasons of competition including matches, and tons of dry fire, and they all still work like new. I don't see any reason to switch to anything else.

The Vogel trigger from Glocktriggers.com is about the best deal for your money period.

I've built 2# triggers In my game gun, but eventually they'll be prone to failure. I won a Vogel setup at a match and ran that in my 34 for 3 years and was super pleased with it.

I really like their stuff. You can do the same thing for less money if you buy the parts yourself, but buying a kit definitely lets you skip the tinkering.
