Getting Started

Depends on your comfort level. If you are pretty decent with another discipline, such as USPSA, and are comfortable with your rifle and shotgun - I would say dive right in. It never hurts to go watch a little just to see how things are done but if it's a local match, the other shooters don't mind helping out and giving you pointers along the way.

What equipment do you have and what division do you plan on shooting in?

Dive in!!! There is a lot of things you can only learn by doing or making the mistake of not doing in a match. The shooters on your squads at a match are a huge resource for help too. See you on the range.

I'm diving in ! Don't care if I reload out of cargo pockets! I shoot USPSA, so I'm sure squad mates will help you out. Lend you gear, show you what to do, some even let you use their guns. At the local level, we all just want to improve and have fun.

I'm ready to dive in I think. I've been lurking on this site for awhile trying to figure out what I can make do with and what I need to spend money on and I've finally decided I need to participate before I prioritize.

It is always best to shoot before you buy. I have bought countless things that didn't work. The guys on this forum can tell you what works and what doesn't and why. Don't be shy/ Ask questions and save yourself some money and get faster faster.

Shoot what you have and borrow what you don't. I spent thousands of dollars on stuff I replaced later. It will take 50 matches and 50k rounds before you really know what you want anyway. If you have literally no gear then start with this:

Sturdy belt
Taccom Load 2 caddies (dual load 16 vest thing tim makes is the cheapest)
Cheap Kydex holster and mag pouches (2 pistol 1 rifle)
Whatever used glock/xd/m&p you can find used in 9mm... Full Sized guns only
Stag, doublestar, etc "3gun" rifle. Or any ar-15 at all, If it has irons shoot those, if not look for a used burris mtac, tac30, millet dms-1, etc...
Benelli m1/m2... try and find one used.

This will get you playing the game with nothing holding you back for a long time. As you get better you can add triggers and barrels and widgets to the rifle, pistol, and shotgun and end up with a world class rig if you want. Or you can sell them for almost what you have in them. You don't need 10k worth of gear to play our game. Just be warned, it's more addictive than crack!

The sooner you get to a match the better... Like the yuppies say, "A year from now you'll be happy you started today".

Yeah, I only live about 10 miles from the OKC gun range and plan on making the next 3 gun shoot, and all the rest of them after that! I'll be the old fart chewing a cigar stub and shooting a CZ 75B and an M2 w/28" bbl and matching tube.
