I'm a relative newbie myself. I usually bring 300 rounds to matches. 150-200 would do for most all, but I'd rather not run out due to misses. I tend to be over prepared for everything. Basic gear would be a eyes and ears, pistol, a few magazines, a holster and mag pouches. I think 32 rounds will get you through most any USPSA stage (could be wrong) so the number of mags depends on capacity. My best piece of advice is just to bring the gear you have and show up to the match. These guys will lend holsters, mag pouches, I've even had guys offer to let me run their guns. I've never seen a more welcoming group to a newbie. Not sure what areas you're interested in shooting matches in but I'll be at the Ponca match on Aug 11th. You're welcome to use any gear I have, as modest as it is. The first step is to get to a match and be ready to have fun!

And..you found the right place to ask questions before you go..just ask and you will get good answers from Boomer Shooter..Dustin nailed it all...bring something cool to drink anywhere this time of year and you'll be good to go

Our rule book. I do believe most idpa gear is legal for uspsa the difference is you'll need nore mags, for instance I shoot production so I can only load 10 rounds in my 17 round mags, now 4 mags(40 rounds) got me through most matches till I shot a match at USSA and they decided to set up a wall of steel and a 32 round stage, I had to borrow some mags. Now when I'm shooting production I have 6 mags which gets me through just about any stage without running dry. If I shoot limited, I would probably carry only 3 or maybe 4 fully loaded mags. What do you have as far as gear? And a lot of people think either they need to prep for competition or are not ready don't fall in that group just jump in and join the addiction, I haven't met one person that shot their first match and said I'm not going to do that again.

Agree with all of the above. It is truely a fun experience and the shooters are incredibly polite and helpful.

I got all my gear from Tony Wall's site makereadyproshop. He is a member here and will hook you up with all the basics you'll need.

Justin, What gun are going to be shooting. Some of the recommendations might depend on what you shoot.

More than likely a g17 with ported barrel zev tech fulcrum trigger, i have 4 mags for it

This puts you in open division.
This isn't good because you'll be competing with guns that have comps & red dots & 170mm mags

Ported barrels sound like a great idea but in competition they put you in division's against $5,000 race guns that are usually being driven by the fastest Shooters at the match.

If you still have your factory barrel drop that bad boy in the gun instead.

A G17 is best suited for Production Division. When I shoot production I usually carry 5 mags. One mag in the gun and 4 on the belt. When I first started shooting matches and did a lot of missing shots and/or dropping mags during running reloads I carried 1 mag in the gun and 5 mags on the belt just in case there was a big 32 round stage with lots of steel targets on it.

Its a lot easier to get way with five for glocks, my mags have the big bottom lip and I occasionally send one flying somewhere in the stage. Kinda embaressing to run out of ammo because you through your mag on the ground. I need better mag holders, I'm working up to that one ar a time though.

I still bring 300 rounds to each USPSA match, since once I had 3 reshoots. Other than those rare occasions its unusual to go past 200 rounds even at a 7 stage match. In limited division I carry three 19 round mags on my belt and 20+1 in the gun. Limited 10 I have 4 on the belt plus one in the gun. Single Stack I have 6 on the belt plus one in the gun.

The theory on first match changes between people, some say shoot production to learn stage breakdowns. I say shoot limited a new shooter has enough to worry about/learn rather than thinking about mag changes.
Any IDPA gear should cover you in USPSA just add some mag pouches and go play, after about 4-5 matches you will have a pretty good idea on what gear or division you want to play in. Spend money then.
