General Discussion, AGAIN?

Jamie this post is not directed towards you. Your post just gave me an avenue to give my personal feelings on the topical questions.

I'm not opposed to growing, I just opposed to compromising our principles to attain that growth.

Why does it come down to us or them. I'm an active member of both sites & I know where to go to get what I'm looking for.

Many already consider this the premier gun forum in Okla. :D

Everyone is more than welcome & I'm glad we're all here.
My problem is that even though the GD is only visible to those that request it. The moment someone gets their feelings hurt or pissed off about something in GD. That animosity & hard feelings are going to spill over into the gun threads. Cyberstalking or just plain being a jackhole & contradicting everything the offending poster says just to piss them off. Then "we" have to deal with the pissing contest too. If that could be kept out of the gun related threads so we never see it & "nothing changes" for us, I say let 'em post away about whatever they want. I just know it can't happen.

If you think there'll be civility & harmony in a GD forum, just look at what talking about having a GD forum has done.

Wall,

I am not all seeing or all knowing, but I assure you that if I witness such snide behavior, I will address it with the member in private and if need be, I will bring it to the administrator's attention to be dealt with further.

Keep in mind, this new off-topic forum is on a trial basis and if it proves to be more trouble than it's worth, it will be deleted and done so with haste.

I think this needs to be moved to the "other" general discussion section. This has nothing to do with firearms. And I thought you said these issues were going to be closely monitored? lol jk.

Didnt we have a poll about this? What were the results?

That thread was apparently removed. Hmmm, what does that tell you?
This thread is 6 hours old and has already grown to 3 pages with lots of bickering. Hmmm, what does that tell you?

You could just post a link to that other site's GD forum, or a link to Oprah or The View.

I say we let it run for a week or two adn see how it goes. The whole thing is to also give the members what they want. I know personally I've been getting a lot of request for this. We can always put people in "time outs" if we have to :-)

If a few weeks from now and this doenst look like it did any good or looks like a bad idea - we can simply remove the GD area

Look Wall. I understand what your saying. The problems I have are that we don't need to micro manage what people say. Who gives a rip about people who get their feelings hurt, maybe you shouldn't be on a gun forum if you wear your feelings on your sleeve. On your quote about how some people already consider this to be the premier site in OK: Then why do 3/4 of you run back to OSA when they get up and running strong again? I've tried to be loyal to OSA but when I see people throwing hundreds of dollars at Kelly and the site continues to get worse, well lets just say it pisses me off. My loyalty will be here as I have no respect for the "other site". GD or no GD I'm here. I hope to learn as much as I can but at the same time I still want to be checked in without being restricted to gun only talk.

Well said.

Did the poll results reflect this?
If you have to put people in "time out", then its obviously a failure.

You want growth...but are you ok with a tumor?

Maybe it's just me, but I fail to see why this is such an issue for some people. If you don't request access to the off-topic forum, you'll never see it. As DuBois said, this is a trial run and it will be evaluated in a week or two. If it's proven to be a bad idea or to be more trouble than it's worth, it will be removed.

Judging all general discussion areas by the circus at OSA is hardly the wise thing to do.

I unlocked this thread because like the poll that was cut too short the discussion isn't over. If you can't be polite and voice your opinions without being a dick dont say anything.

I want a GD because I want to grow membership. I started this forum with Brandon so that we could have a place for us competitive shooting guys to post scores, match announcements, etc. Then I got the crazy idea that I would run for OK section coordinator this year which I will so that I could give back to the sport I love. I then realized that this forum is a great way to get guys that own guns introduced to a sport that they have no idea about but would more than likely enjoy. So when I see our attendance jump to 40-60 during outages over there and drop to 10 when it's up I get frustrated. How am I gonna reach the new shooters if they aren't here? Simple. Have what they want! We have great professional shooters, have great group buys, have great sponsors, have great software, have general discussion. I want the guys that are here to stay because you are like me and have a passion for shooting and guns but I need a way to reach the other guys to show them what I missed out on for 15 years.

So we are going to try the GD thing and see where it takes us. If we can get more people shooting with us it's gonna stay. If it becomes a cancer then it's gonna go.

I think the survival threads and the outdoors forums have nothing to do with guns specifically but nobody minds them because they are close to our interests with firearms. I fully intend to keep the GD pointed towards meaningful topics that have what I consider interesting to a "gun guy".

My #1 rule for the new non firearm GD is if someone particularly me and our moderators thinks WTF? Then it doesn't belong in our GD. Simple A's that. Now let's all discuss the topic in a respectful manner please.

Ive been there from the beginning, Ive seen things change there.
I cool little community gets clogged up with trolls and stupid questions and comments.

I still go to OSA; why cant the guys that want a GD hop over there for that?

Good point, Jesse.

That sounds perfect! I think my tastes lie mostly in line with yours so your filter for the GD section should be fine as long as it's applied when needed.

The problem is that they don't stay here. they gotta stay so we can get them excited about shooting by teaching them and offering them the stuff real forums offer.

I really like this site, the great members are the only reason that I have dicided to start shooting competition, everyone has been really helpful answering my questions, even though I know that they are probably making fun of my questions, nobody has publically poked fun of my many questions. I have learned alot from BoomerShooter.com.

I see both sides of the issue, I am sure at some point the non-firearm BS will pour into the regular gun threads, but we have plenty of regular's here that will make sure the post's get reported.

I have requested access to the new GD section, but if it does turn into a place where there is a bunch of non-sence crap in it, I will simply ask to have my access to it removed.

I will stay here either way, I only go to the other site to check the classifieds, if I want to learn anything about guns, I check here. If there is not already a thread, there are many people here that tell me what I want to know...

Jesse,

General discussion leads to two problem topics in my opinion: politics (non-firearms related) and religion. These discussions become inflamed quickly and the effect of these inflamed discussions carries over to the rest of the forum.

I feel confident that OSA's general discussion has alienated many firearms enthusiasts (or potential enthusiasts) whose political sensibilities have been offended by content in the GD. This is very unfortunate for shooting sports. What's more unfortunate is I have had the displeasure of reporting several instances of outright hate-speech over there, which was always promptly removed, but nonetheless did a huge disservice to our common interest in firearms rights, sports, etc during the time it was up.

I hope I don't offend anyone here by saying this. I think everyone here is great, and the discussion has all been civil and intelligent. But as membership continues to grow (and I'm sorry for this cynicism), some a-holes will show up. I think it's best if we keep the discussion to what we all have in common (firearms). I think General discussion is what ruined OSA, and I hope it doesn't ruin BS too.

There is a word that comes to mind, AMEN!

So I am thinking about making a bologna sandwich, what type of bologna does everyone prefer? Just kidding! ;D

But really, I like B.S. for the great info and how everyone has been extremely helpful answering questions (as ridiculous as they might have been) I have had. If I want to participate in another snowmageddon topic I will go over to OSA. If I want to know or have a question about a firearm or competition or anything else firearm related, I am coming to B.S.
