At this point all I have shot has been steel challenge and USPSA. I really want to get involved with some 3 gun matches.

My question relates to how much equipment I will need to buy. Thinking of the belt; will 3 (4x4) shotgun caddy's, 2 ar mag holders, and 4 pistol mag holders be enough? I have never shot in three gun and this has been nagging me. Thanks for the info

you can do well with 2 pistol mag pouches & 1 or none rifle mag pouches.
I take 3 pistol mags onto the stage-1 in the gun & 2 on the belt.
2 rifle mags-1 in the gun & 1 in my back pocket.

Caddies-depends on the rnd count. An all SG stage could be 30-40 rnds.
3 4x4x's would give you 24rnds on your belt + 9 in the gun on a loaded start.

Much of what I carry is the same as above. I usually carry at least 1 pistol mag on my belt, even if it is a 6 round stage - I bring 3 pouches to a match.

I also carry 1 rifle mag on my belt, but I have 2 pouches. I put both on the belt for empty rifle stage starts.

For shotgun, taking a tip from Kurt, I always have at least the minimum round count on my belt. If its a stage with 12 birdshot targets and 4 slugs, I'll have 3 MME Caddies with birdshot and one with slugs, in addition to what's in the tube. If its an empty gun start, I'll add more. I have 6 MME caddies and one 4x4. If a stage is bigger than 32 rounds, I'll borrow caddies from my buddies. I can also put a few rounds on my gun but I rarely use those.

Last match I used one rifle mag, two pistol mags, and three 6-round shell caddies worth of shells in addition to what was pre-loaded in the shotgun. So on my belt I had three shell caddies, a holster for my pistol, and one pistol mag pouch. That setup worked for the whole match. On past stages I've needed two rifle mags and more shell caddies, but the only time I needed more than two pistol mags was when I used a 1911. One AR mag pouch should cover you for OKCGC.

I agree with Wall
I have 6 MME caddies have cut it close several times, keep in mind in real life on a big all shotgun stage there are many opportunities to drop shells.

I tend to gear up for each stage, pistol/rifle, pistol/shotgun, shotgun you get the idea. I always tend to take more than I'll need as the dangdest things happen. I've got a little AR mag pouch Troy made that goes in the middle of my back out of the way from everything which really helps. You don't want to have a mess of stuff to fumble around with extra on your belt as Mr. Miller has said like most of what he says is true.

You'll get some good advice here, might show up to a 3-gun and see what everyone is doing and straping on. Later,

Kirk
