First AR - BCM or Colt?

Thanks again 11B, tigerstripe and armaborealis! I am very confident (and excited) in the DD as well.

I have been searching online everywhere for pmags and came up empty. I told (complained) to my wife about it as she was on her way out to go shopping. Of course she came home an hour later with 8 Gen 3 pmags....in love all over again. I'm a lucky man.

I will be holding off on the optics until I feel confident with the irons. Just plan on getting a lot of range time and ammo (which seems almost as difficult to find these days).

Thanks for your input and support.

Cheers to you...

I'd recommend at least 1 20 round magazine, whether its a PMag or a USGI aluminum one. When you are bench resting getting the rifle zeroed or just working on fundamentals, the shorter magazine will be invaluable in terms of clearance. I find a lot of times a 30 rounder is too long, and I have to pad up higher than what feels comfortable.

Don't discount the aluminum mags...people are flocking to PMags but for daily use or stockpile purposes, they are great. I have 50 of them sitting in my safe and possibly more on the way after Jan 1.

Great point 11B and something I would not have thought of or known. Thank you. I will try to pick one up at Upstate Armory Group when I get the call from bob that my rifle is in.

Any suggestions with aluminum mags or is one just as good as another, assuming I can find one at a price less than 3-4X retail(!).

Merry Christmas and thank again for all of the great information.

Perfect! Just ordered a few. Thanks for all of your help, yet again, 11B. I owe you a nice lunch when I get down into your neck of the woods for an afternoon at the range and a peek through your ACOG :D

I confirmed with DD that the rifle will be here around New Years. An ironic twist to this is I feel like I am getting a new Jeep but there is no fuel to be found to take it for a test run. Ammo, for a rookie like myself, seems to be hard to find. I have been researching anything from 55 - 77 grain loads to no avail.

Hopefully things will get more plentiful with time but I was really hoping to load up on a few 1,000 rounds to get familiar with the weapon and have a small surplus. Same story every rookie is probably telling right about now! Oh well....keep on keeping on.

Thanks again for everything. Cheers to you and yours.....

The magpul anti-tilt followers are desireable. If you're willing to wait for backorders, the DSGARMS mags are g2g and on sale.

You are getting into this at a terrible time for stocking up... Sorry, man. I'd suggest getting a few boxes of premium defensive ammo; the HORNADY TAP FPD was in stock at PSA last time I checked their site. THen whatever you can in .223 or 5.56 that is semi reasonably priced. Get it zeroed, check the premium ammo for smooth function; then tons of dry fire and some .22 LR work (assuming you have a .22LR) and then validate your dry fire/.22 with centerfire.

I suspect it will be a few months before ammo prices return to semi-normal.

Thanks for the reply armaborealis. Not to sound sycophantic but I learn something new from you all with each reply. I really am enjoying the forum and the willingness of those who have already "been there and done that" to share their experiences.

And you are right...I could not have picked a worse time to jump into this black rifle adventure. I am kicking myself for not doing it sooner. Lesson learned. I have spent the last 6 months focusing on researching my Glocks, pistol shooting, conceal carry, IWB holsters, carry belts, .45 and 9mm ammo and so on. Oh well. Too bad I did not reverse the order of the two....

Cheers to a great Christmas!

The anti-tilt followers are nice piece of mind to have if the magazines come with them, but honestly, I've used standard USGI mags with green followers for quite some time and the only magazine related failures I've had are due to the feed lips being bent out of place or the spring has just been completely worn out, both problems were due to old, heavily used magazines needing to be taken out of rotation. Never had rounds bind up in the mag because of the follower or any emergencies created by that happening. Not to mention, I wouldn't want to disassemble each and every one of my stock piled mags are put new followers in...that would be a time consuming task.

And researching and purchasing pistols first wasn't a bad choice. If you have your CWP, you'll get more daily use from your pistols; just make sure you get a high quality personal protection round for whatever you carry. BTW, I'd feel bad accepting a free lunch over some simple advice. What part of SC are you in? I'm local to the ranges in the Columbia area and a short drive from Philsons (I-26/I-385 vicinity). I'm always up for shooting

Thanks 11B. I appreciate it. I am up in Simpsonville (just changed my header). I just moved here 8 months ago from San Diego with my wife and 22 month old son.

I would love to hit the range with you once my rifle arrives and I would not at all mind the drive. I enjoy seeing new places here in SC and getting to know my new home state a little better. Funny...with what used to be my commute time in San Diego I can now drive to 4 different states in that same timeframe. I love this place.

We are good to go with our Glocks for concealed carry. I was so excited to be able to legally carry here (San Diego County is impossible to get your CWP) that I jumped on it right when we moved here. Just a little too new to the game to see what was going to happen in regards to AR's, ammo supply, etc.

Thanks again for everything. I'll drop you a line after New Years and see if we could meet up down in your area for some shooting!

Cheers to you and yours...

Philson's Range is probably about 45 minutes from Simpsonville down 385 to I-26; same distance from me and Lexington.

On the CWP note, if you do a lot of traveling, especially to Georgia, I'd recommend getting a Utah out of state CFP, which allows for carry in a couple dozen more states.

I don't think anyone could have predicted this kind of panic buying. Just look on Craigslist, Armslist, and local stores and see if you can find people selling things at reasonable prices.
