I've been looking for some blank polymer 1911 grips to shape and stipple. There just arent any out there...yes, you can buy cheap grips and just grind/stipple over them. But there doesnt seem to be a 'gunsmith blank' available. (If you know of a source, plz let me know)

I wanted some blanks to stipple into very rough, very grippy, and lightweight grip panels for my competition single stack gun (Trojan .40)
I was discussing another project with Scott Perman ( www.dsperman.com ) and he surprised me with these prototype blank grip panels to test for him.

Heres my initial review and opinion.
1st They are very light...less than half the weight of my G10 grips (Davidsons)
They are a hair on the small and thin side, which is fine for me and my hands.
Fit was perfect, I didnt have to do any fitting or fiddling. The thumb safety, ambi safety, slide release, etc all had plenty of clearance.
Since these are blanks, there is no relief for the mag release, msh pin, etc.
The outer surface is smooth, really smooth. They will need stippling or grip tape, and thats exactly the point. I'll probably keep a smooth set for a carry gun. My comp gun will get a set that is stippled to a roughness somewhere between a porcupine, a cactus, and barbed wire.

Perman is making a few cool and unique things for the gun sports. There is an article about his latest project in the new Front Sight magazine. Check him out. Look for my other review of Perman's 1911 magwell grips.
