Draw?

To me, when keeping it on the weak side I'm able to get my shirt up with my weak and slower hand, while drawing with my strong hand. If I have to reach across with my weak hand it always seems to be slower. Lifting and drawing both with my strong hand is even worse.

Guess I need to just pick one and practice a few thousand times to get the muscle memory.

Wait, what? Everyone who carries strong-side appendix clears their shirt with their weak hand, right? You don't have to reach across, just grab the center of your shirt. If you cross-draw, you're going to have to actually reach across with your strong hand anyways.

Try different stuff to figure out what works, and do it with a shot timer. Remember that your brain is really bad at timing stuff so something that feels faster might not actually be faster.

I'm sure this is going to draw fire, but I refuse to use seat belts.
Yep, I've been fined, but watching two guys burn to death, while burning my self to get them out of a vehicle while they were trying to unbuckle themselves, screaming for their momma's has burned that image into my mind. they would be alive after that incident had seat belts not been used.
That being said, use your personal judgement to do what you consider necessary to make yourself safe and legal in this world.

As someone who instruments automotive crash tests I can tell you that this is probably one of the worst ideas you've ever had.

Wear your seatbelt. Carry a knife for seatbelt cutting purposes.

I can't appendix carry on my right side comfortably. I spend too much time in a car and sitting down, my gun just pokes me in the gut. If I could carry that way I would and I can understand how that would be easier. I have to carry either on my left appendix with the grip facing forward (won't poke me in the gut that way) or put it on my 3-4 o'clock.

Maybe I'll make my wife time me in various positions to see which one is better. lol

Pretty sure she does this for Accurate Ron already.

My strog side draw looks a lot like a flash bag draw... grab center/slightly right of center seam of my shirt and give a flash getting the shirt out of the way to clear the draw. Distraction/disorenitation for the blinding flash of pale white flubber like flesh.

HAH! Maybe I should carry an ankle holster then. Seeing my white ass bird legs is sure to blind someone.

An added benefit of AIWB is that you can draw the pistol with your support hand should it suddenly become your primary hand (due to injury.....or being cut off by Dennis when he is hacking you out of your seatbelt).

Resist the urge to use your support hand to lift your shirt. Especially if you reach across your body to do so. BJJ 101.....never reach across your body. I use a technique that I picked up from Mike Seeklander. With my strong hand, I make a 90degree with my thumb. The thumb comes up under the shirt and pulls the shirt HIGH, then the hand drives down to the pistol.

And Dennis.....wear your seatbelt. That way we know where to find your corpse. Makes life easier on us, EMS, and the Fire guys. ;)

Great advise Troy. I'll have to give that a shot.

I've been putting on my holster at different positions and doing dry fire drills. Wearing a nice two clip at my 4 o'clock is the most comfortable, but I'm still struggling with getting a smooth draw. I've been grabbing my shirt with my right hand, then drawing. I'll try lifting with my thumb as you suggested and see if that is any better.

On the seatbelt debate, mine probably saved my life. In April I had a drunk driver pull out in front of me. I was doing 65 mph on the highway and had no time to react. I t-boned him at 65 mph. I was able to get out of my car and walk around fine. I was wearing my seatbelt and was really sore for a couple weeks but had no real injuries. He didn't have his seatbelt on. He was ejected from his truck. He was flown to OU Medical Center where he spent a couple months under care, part of that in a coma. He had brain injuries and could be a vegetable now for all I know. I firmly believe that my seatbelt saved my life or at least saved me from very serious injuries that night. Your chances are better with a seatbelt. I always have a knife in my pocket. Might be smart to clip a knife close to you in your vehicle as well in case you can't get in your pocket.

Usually the drunks without a seat belt are the ones that walk away without a scrape and the family man is the one to get medi-flighted out.

Glad to hear you're OK.

no seatbelt talk unless it has to do with the topic please.
