Here in wetern Ky, I have seen more doves than ever before. Has anyone noticed this elsewhere? Of course, I'm sure they will all be gone by dove season, but it looks promising right now!

This is the time of year I see them migrate into town. Years past I have gone all summer with out seeing one only to see a whole flock on opening day.

I'm seeing more mourning doves this year than in the last several. For the last several years the eurasians have far outnumbered the mourning dove in my part of town and they still do but it's looking way better than the last several years. I miss the days when all you saw were mourning doves and they were just thick.

About normal here in the NC part of Okla. (normal= lots of dove in the stubble fields)
Kind of an interesting side note. A friend got a dove hunting survey from the National Wildlife Service. They wanted to know how many days he had been in the field, how many dove were harvested, and so on.
But then the survey turned kind of strange. It started asking questions about dove hunting with steel shot, and if it were implemented, would he still hunt dove, and questions along that line.

I smell something, and its not pleasant.

We have to use steel shot on most public land for doves. But most public dove fields are on or adjoin wetlands.

How do you like the steel compared to lead if you have had the chance to compare?

I think a lot of objection is because a lot of shooters (like me) bring out grandpa's old Browning hump back, or Parked double built way back when.

Steel, even with the new thicker wads are not recomended to be shot from them.

Dove hunting is more of a family tradition for shooting and getting together with friends more so than any other aspect of the hunting sports.

We have friends that moved from Georgia to Okla several years ago. He puts in food plots to attract dove, so when season rolls around, they put on a Georgia plantation type hunt.

The guys, and gals that want to hunt, spend the afternoon and evening shooting dove. The ones not in the field, bring out lemonaid or water every so often on the Rhino. At the end of the hunt, the dogs are brought out to recover birds not recovered, and finally, at the end of the day, the steaks and fine whisky are brought out to finish out the evening.

It gets no better than that. :D

Honestly, I always just figured I sucked at wing shooting, but it could have been the steel. I don't like it, and now that it's gone I'm going to duck hunt with something else.

We don't have enough land for the big, but my son has a good time down the road at a pond fishing and hunting doves at the same time. He has to leave the retriever at home though, because she kept going out and getting his bobber. So much for our hunting dog...

LOL! I took my Brittany out on the bass boat once. Every time I threw a spinner bait, he would jump into the water to chase it back to the boat.
I had to reel really quick!

It gets worse, the damn dog howls at duck calls! It's really a shame too, she is so athletic, and loves to swim.
