Does the term COMPETITION or MATCH scare you?

Prepare yourself mentally - JUST LIKE IT'S A MATCH.
Do this EVERY TIME you practice.

During the time frame where I was practicing to actually get good, my shooting partner must've seen me approach my first practice run with less than full attention.

Before he started the timer, he said, "Ok, you're at the Nationals. First day, first stage and YOU are the first shooter."

That changed everything. Suddenly, it wasn't "Oh, crap, well, I'll do better next time. If not, the the time after that. If not, then...."

I changed my approach and mindset to, THIS run counts, THIS is the one that matters.

It made a world of difference.

Since then, I HAVE been the first shooter on the first stage on the first day an Nationals !

Same here David. I think because of my last name, and a bit of luck I always seem to be the first shooter at every major match I go to, including last year's Single Stack Nationals. So I practice that way too. I also go to those matches ASSUMING that I am going to be the first shooter so I make sure I am ready/sharp straight out of the box that way I am never caught off guard. I think that is a good rule of thumb for practice routines, as well as every match you shoot.

When is our next Heartland Outdoors Concealed Carry Gun Organized Shooting Event (HOCCGOSE)? Feb. 20?

Taymoor, I expect to see you there and you can shoot on my squad so there will be at least one person you beat :)

I definitely would have gone, but it landed on my Dad's birthday. You have my word that I'll be at the next OSE (organized shooting event) though!

I like to compete. I am naturally competitive, but I don't have to be overt about it. I find that my concentration is better during a competition which sometimes means I actually shoot better.

The best person for me to compete against is myself, unless there is money involved. Then its everyone else, especially "that guy" that beat me last time.

Scares the hell out of me. That's why I pee my pants before every match and puke before every stage. Also I seem to fart alot during the stages. Not sure if that's part of being nervous or some serious medical condition.

Do you really vomit before a match? I suggest some relaxation exercises. Chill baby.

I would have guessed you puked 'cuz you had worms. The farting? I thought that was someone shooting a suppressed gun loaded with black powder.

so how exactly does the squad thing work at the HOCCGOSE? Are we scored together or just staged together? Or perhaps, one of us lays down super tactical suppressive fire while the other flanks the paper assailant, as we would in any normal self-defense situation.

The terms don't scare me. They do however inform me that the "event" is something I'm not likely to participate in since I'm not interested in competing against a clock or others. I prefer to just shoot at a casual pace. Granted my idea of fun probably is different than the guy who enjoys shooting competitively for fun. Different strokes...

this reminds me alot of the polls they took about people going to a gym it was (around) 27% of people thought they needed to lose weight or get in better shape BEFORE they joined a gym!!!! i think alot of people are so scared of not doing well they won't come, when really one of the only ways to get better is going to matches...

What about competitive with yourself? I use the matches as my measuring stick to see if my practice is working. Plus they are the only place you can shoot the targets that we shoot the way we shoot them which is fun.

Or doing a lot of youtube belt loop bumpfire videos.

That cracked me up right there. It also reminded mecthst my humongous video needs to be updated with my latest gat.

Can't say that I'm competitive with myself even. Maybe it's because I'm an older guy (46) and don't think like a younger person would.

"Fun" is a subjective term depending on each person's viewpoint. One persons fun is another persons fear. Or just boring. My sister-in-law thinks flying down from Canada to Disney World in Florida is "fun". I'd find it extremely dull. My other hobby would seem dull and boring to many. It's all about perspective I suppose.

Anywayz, the terms imply competition which isn't my cup of coffee simply because I'm not competitive.

DutchWrangler, I understand you thoughts, I am very competitive in what I do. I like turkey shoots or any form of competition. My brother, who shoots extremely well is just the opposite and does not care ofr any of it. Just different, but I look forward to your comments on your experiences as they will be valuable. Yea and 46 is OLD!! I have been 46 for 14 years now. Later rdd

The words "Match or Competiton" don't scare me. It's that #$%_ timer! I can stand and shoot, and I can move and shoot, granted I may not move quickly or gracefully (when you young guys get to my age nothing is quick or gracefull), but I can do that and have a whole lot of fun doing that. IMHO I'm getting better at it with each "Match" I participate in. I don't get to practice live fire as much as I would like, who does other than the pros. But when I do practice, the A zone is a fairly large target at the average ranges we shoot competitively.

But put me in that box and let that timer go off and it's like I have left my body and all I want to do is beat that clock. My mind wants to go much faster than my body can perform well.

I'm learning to exercise some control and to practice what others in this thread have said, in that I wait for that good sight picture and shoot for the A's within my capabilities and not just blaze away in the hope that I'll hit somthing that counts in a shorter amount of time.

Bottom line, for me it is not the Competition or Match title that "Scare" me or make my heart fun fast. It's that $#*& timer!

Out! :o

I never went to a match because I didn't want to get made fun of, if I didn't shoot well. I finally went to one, and found out that it is nothing like that at all. I went way to fast and missed targets and shot targets that wernt supposed to be shot. I placed like 37th out of 41. And not 1 person made fun of me, actually people were giving me advice on what I can do to improve. I had so much fun that I am going to start going to every match that I can

I wish everybody would hear statements like this one. Glad your hooked Justin!
