Do you keep your gun WITH YOU at home?

I have a friend who does, he keeps his CLOSE BY, just like most younger people keep thier cell phone within reach at all times.

he wears a holster of some sort at home, sometimes, even if he out riding his lawnmower.

you say paranoia...he says prepared.

here is what happened to another guy I konw, some guy tried to break in his detached garage, TWICE>..

guy was in a mid 90's green dodge ram



tried twice at a buddy's place, summerville high school area.
technically, tried to get in his garage, not in house.

called cops first time, he got away.

got into a scuffle second time, got away.

Your first friend is correct "Prepared". I also have one within reach most all the time at home.

Yup. A defensive tool is close by most of the time. If you come to my door, it's close to you.

I am never very far away from a gun...but, I will confess...in hot weather I usually don't have anything on me...Now in colder weather, I carry all the time...Guess because of more clothing...

For me, its part of getting dressed. If I am in gym shorts, (ie:working out), it is within arms reach.

It is even more unfortunate that any intruders will be dealt with using methods less humane than firearms. :twisted:

I open carry at home...the paddle holster is more comfortable than a IWB. I'm usually tinkering with a long gun or another pistol of some sort...add that to my carry piece and my hidden "middle of the night invasion" AK-47, there are 3-4 guns out of the safe at any given time in my house.

I open carry when mowing the lawn or hanging out outside. Its legal and more comfortable in the heat.

Whenever someone asks if I have a knife on me, I always reply, "I have pants on, don't I?"

After ANOTHER late night visitor, my wife is carrying her handgun into the nursery with her whenever she tends to our 5 month old. (BTW, our lease is up in 38 days looong days.)

I cannot afford to NOT have a firearm close by here in the mill hill.

How well do those finger-shape combo gunsafes work? My wife and I are considering modifying our nightstands. We have a curious 8-month old; won't be too long before she's old enough to find them/get into trouble and too young to be taught better. While I don't carry my pistol with me everywhere around the house (best weapon in the house is my 6-cell maglight in the hands of my pissed off wife - you do NOT want her to hulk out on you) I do like them to be available quickly when we're sleeping. I used to sleep with the AR under the bed, but well, now we have a baby

Suggestions? I do have a gunsafe for the long guns, and subscribe to Col. Cooper's theory that a handgun is there to fight your way to your rifle.

I don't have much use for those silly pistol safes with the finger shaped keypad (ymmv). I've tried them and not found them to be particularly fast. I use a speed vault and also have curious younguns around.

I differ from Jeff Cooper in that I feel a long gun is a two handed weapon and may need one of my hands for something else during a self defense scenario.

I'm pretty sure that I'll never be able to afford the training time to get as proficient with a pistol as I am with an AR, thanks to the USAF. I think training and competency makes more of a difference, and for me that is the AR.

the wife has hers in her purse which is always within arms length
I usually have one in my pocket or on my hip at all times
at night they are on the night stands and a mossberg 20 ga pump is velcrowed just under my side of the bed
I even have one in my beer cooler when I am in the pool

We have minivault that my wife keeps her pistol in. It has the indention for the fingers. It is fast in the dark and takes little practice. I check it once a month and replace batteries each Oct. with the smoke alarms. The wife's pistol is on the bottom shelf and my wife's regular good jewelry is on the top shelf. There are extra ammo and speedloaders for the pistol. My gun is either on me or beside me or I'm close to others in the house. Never far away.
