I was reading about these on-line, anyone have experience with them? 16" barrel looks weird with a rifle gas system.

most dissipator barrels are mid-length gas with a low-profile block under the handguards. The front sight base is that only, no gas tube.

Supposedly gets you better sight radius on an otherwise compact weapon.

I was under the impression that a dissipator was simply a style, where the railed handguard extends near the end of the barrel.

It was explained to me that it is a 16" barrel with a rifle length gas system. The ones with the longer sights but mid-length gas systems are called mock-dissapater rifles. On the rifle system the gas port so a little larger than the mid-length and carbine system. Just what I was told.

I first saw the "dissipator" style rifles in Bushmaster catalogs back around 2002 or so. They listed them as a 16" barrel with a rifle length gas system. This, in theory, should lead to a softer shooting rifle with the advantage of a full rifle length sight radius. This was before the true advent and popularity of full length free floating handguards over low profile gas blocks. It can still be done, but a mid-length gas system with a full rail will give you a similar effect. If you want standard rifle length hand guards on a 16" barrel though, it is still an option. I think the look is the only thing keeping it from becoming popular, as I have seen no downside and the additional sight radius is almost always a good option.

Maybe the guys who shoot the Irons Division in 3-gun benefit from it. I've also read what Joel was talking about, them being a "softer" shooting rifle. I always thought the AR was pretty soft, can't imagine how much of a difference it would make.

The dissapators I have seen/heard of are either: dual tune-able gas (rifle+mid/carbine) or low-pro mid/carbine with a pinned FSB at rifle length but not tapped for rifle gas.

As explained to me, dissapators will always have the FSB at rifle position

I bought one 20 + years ago. I'll try to remember to bring it this weekend to the shoots n fest . 16" barrel with the reliability of a rifle length barrel. The only thing I don't like about them are their looks.

I shoot in the Tac Irons division in 3 gun( Heavy Metal too). I have an 18" 1-8 Wylde chambered barrel with a rifle length gas system. I use a low pro gas block under a 15" free float rail with my front sight mounted just behind my compensator. This setup does 3 things for me. First the rifle length gas system along with a good comp makes the rifle run flat when you are trying to put rounds downrange as fast and accurately as possible. Second the full length freefloat rail keeps me from throwings shots high, left or right, when shooting off a barricade or some other improvised rest. Third and probalby most important is the increased sight radius. I need every advantage I can get when shooting at 10" flash target at 300+ yards. Those things are just a white speck on top of my sight post.
