It is permissible to do so. This is going to solve a problem for me.

Deactivating the Grip safety

Created:

12/09/12

Effective:

12/09/12

Rule Number:

8.1.2.4

Applies to:

Pistol

Ruling Authority:

Board of Directors

Status:

Released

Question:

I have been doing a bit of looking around and have found that there is a good deal of confusion concerning whether grip safeties may be deactivated on a 1911 if it is used in the Single Stack category. I have a lot of trouble shooting a 1911 with an active grip safety, but would like to shoot Single Stack. Unfortunately I get many differing answers on this question.

Answer:

When applicable, the grip safety may be disabled provided that the primary safety as described in 8.1.2.4 is operable. Production division handguns are explicitly excluded from this ruling.

I'm sure pinning it will be much more effective than us wrapping masking tape around it in the rain during a match.

I have no idea what the rule interpretation is but, if you pin it is it truly deactivated as in inoperable? As I understand it, it is still an "operable" safety. I.E. No alteration to it has been done.

Kurt Miller said there was a way to deactivate it without pinning or cutting the arm at OKCGC USPSA this month. That was the end of the talk, so I wonder what the fix was. Definitely not a rubber band or tape, though. Maybe a wedge?

The information I posted was for USPSA and gleaned from the USPSA website.

What does "pinned" mean?

With my gunsmithing skills in mind, taping is the easiest fix. Thus far tape has been effective (and it is reversible). I have awesome sticking black tape and it is not so noticeable.

Tally ho
