Just wanted to get everyone's input on this before I advise him. He wants it to use primarily as a farm gun: denying armadillo encroachment, plinking, short to mid range recreational paper-punching. It's hard for me to find a happy medium as I like to build my rifles with superior products which drive the cost up. His budget is around $1200 and that may or may not include optics. He likes my T1 and 3xMag setup, but that obviously doesn't fit the budget very well. What are your suggestions: build, buy, or look for a good used rifle? I know this is extremely open-ended, I was just hoping for some suggestions and diverse insight so I can offer some informed advice considering opinions other than my own. Thanks in advance, folks.

My dad is completely happy with a full rifle and TAC30 optic. It's basically a Stag model 4. My basic Stag carbine has been awesome as well. Neither with the TAC30 would bust your budget.

I put together an AR carbine for $630 with a free-floated barrel last year, and that included the $150 BoomerShooter lower receiver. It is very accurate, and totally reliable.
Aero Precision upper and BCG, used Del-Ton 16" 1:9 govt barrel, DPMS dust cover, forward assist plug and roll pin, DPMS lower parts kit, DPMS charging handle, Ergo grip (less than 1/2 price due to horrific Zombie green color), Model 1 free float tube ($35!!!!), used A2 flash hider, used Kies gas block, used Del-Ton gas tube, DPMS gas tube roll pin, used generic M4 carbine stock kit with spring and buffer. So so fine.
Put an Aimpoint Pro on it for aiming and such.

It has been tossed in barrels a bit, and run hard a little while. I will be shooting the elephant dung out of it.

A mid length Delton kit, a stripped lower, and a Tac-30 should have him under budget enough that he could upgrade the trigger too.

I don't know, I think PSA has lots of options for under that amount and with the new Ruger DI gun hitting shelves, your options are pretty good for under 1200 bucks. I'm no expert though.

Any 3 series Stag or a entry Colt competition will be a great all around rifle within his budget. I'm a grandpa aged shooter and I have a Stag 3G I love.

Have him build it. I put together a M4 using the cheapest components out there(some used) to use as a truck/tractor gun on the farm. If it got stolen, it wasn't a big loss. Somewhere in the $500 neighborhood.

I'm not a paper shooter, but at 100 yds with a stock milspec trigger it shoots 1.5-2" groups from the crappy forward grip/ bipod.
It accounted for 3 coyotes out the window of the combine this spring.

Not necessarily on the first shot.

Spray and pray, spray and pray baby! :D

I love hi cap mags.
