Cost of Being a Pro 3-Gun Competitor 2013

I have thought about that a bunch. It's already happening. If you look at the top pro series guys there are three groups. Guys like me that have been shooting less than 5 years and have the financial independence and a job that allows us to travel and do this. The. You have the guys line Taran, Garcia and Par Kelley and Jerry M that have 10-20 years racing guns. They have relationships with companies that go back years and have those companies as sponsors. Then you have 5 guys from the AMU.

Not a lot of 18-25 year olds out there.

Yep, where else can overweight guys with mortgage payments and bad backs actually compete at the top of their sport? All kidding aside, there's something approachable about this sport that's just not the same in others, though, and I think the more people find out how open and friendly the shooting sports are the more they'll get interested.

Something I failed to mention that goes along with your accessibility is lack of matches. Then when your club does have a match it's once a month or even less frequent. So I guess a lot of the growth needs to happen at the grass roots levels too.

This is what I am dealing with. The local USPSA club and our little 3 gun club finally released dates for matches and wouldn't you know it 1 match a month and they are both on the same date. And in terms of local for me is an hour drive. I wish there were more matches local for me. Kinda tough with one match a month and I have to choose what one I go to, plus deal with work schedule which may have gotten easier for this year with a new promotion, Just plain sucks. Oh yeah I also live in NY which makes it even more difficult.

Jesse, this is actually a pretty intriguing idea and I think it could be a pretty good business model with the right venue, marketing and maybe some stars aligning just right. I could see several revenue streams but the venue would have to be rock solid and I don't see it working at very many places, but around here I think it could fly. I can think of one out there right now.

Totally agree with that, Jesse. I'm just going to jump in head first and try competing, but the fact that I can't even do basic drills on one single, stationary range target due to all of the ranges who ban rapid fire nearly discouraged me in making my decision to try. It would be lovely if there were public ranges that you could at least practice basic drills.
