Okay first off sorry for posting this here, but I didn't know exactly where to put it... Feel free to move it to the proper section...

Okay, so I me and a friend are thinking of getting in to some fun competition shooting... We are just wanting to do something fun and aren't looking to like win money or anything like that... Also we aren't want to shoot in matches that cost a crap load to participate in either... We are wanting to do something more than just standing there shooting... Something more like "tactical" type events if that is even something that is out there... Also not wanting to do something that is going to requires a ridiculously tricked out gun... Maybe something like a long slide glock with a match grade barrel, or even something a Stock G17 could handle... So any info or push in the right direction would be very appreciated...

Thanks,

Trent

Check out the match schedule in the competition area which is where I'm moving this thread. All those matches fit your requirements. The H&H match, Heartland Match, Tri City match and steel challenge at okcgc are all great first matches. Every match on the list has 5-10% new shooters so get out and give it a try. Make sure you have a holster and enough mags to hold 30-40 rounds.

Most importantly Trent let us know which one you are coming to in the match announcement thread. The BS'ers here are more than happy to show you the ropes. It's a lot easier than finding out the hard way. :)

There has been a lot written about people starting match shooting. Here is a good one to read Beginner Thread

I can only speak from my experience. The Carry Gun match at Heartland on the 3rd Sunday was my first match and it is perfect for a first time shooter.

You don't need a race gun, in fact carry guns in carry gear are highly encouraged. Most of us shoot with a cover garment of some kind.

Each stage (4 total) only requires about 18-20 rounds each for a total of 80+-

If Chambers tries that "since you're new you have to carry my gear" stuff, well you're new, & you should just do what he says.

Ya bring what ya got, then ya shoot what ya brung.

Equipment requirements are pretty simple.
-a pistol. 9mm/38 Special or larger caliber.
-a belt holster. It must cover the trigger of your pistol.
-a couple of magazines.
-plus ammo.
-$15-$20 for the match fee.
-and the mindset of a safe shooter.

You can pick up a holster for less than $40 (Blackhawk SERPA or Fobus come to mind); it might not be the fanciest, but it certainly gets the job done. The maximum stage roundcount in a USPSA match is 32 rounds (though most are 24 or less), so you'll want to be able to carry that much. Though most stages are usually 24 rounds are less. Matches at Heartland have a maximum of 18 rounds per stage.

In USPSA, there's an equipment division for every type of gun. Revolvers, M1811 single-stacks, Production, and Open/Limited guns only compete against similar equipment. Bring whatcha got, tell people that you're new to this, and they'll help you get set up. Production guns are basically stock, out-of-box guns, and are limited to ten rounds loaded in the magazine to help level the playing field. Limited guns can have more modifications done to them (or it can be your Production gun, with magazines loaded to full capacity). Open guns are the extreme customized guns, with all the gee-whiz doodads installed. Bring whatever you got, and shoot it safely.

With the friendly folks around here, I'm sure that you can arrange with someone on the board to borrow a holster, some magazines, or even a complete set-up (including pistol and ammo!). Like crack, the first time is usually free.

===== EDIT =====
I forgot the motivational video. I saw this shooter at my first match at H&H (2nd Sundays). If she can do it, so can you. :great:

Jesse T, do you remember how old she is?

I am still kind of new and I see Troy at every event I go to I was wondering if he could give me a hand and some pointers next Sunday at h&h I tried to go a little faster this weekend a okcgc and it didn't really work out for me, usually I go a little slower and I am pretty accurate and do ok... Any help from anyone would be appricated. I would just like to pair up with someone at a match and kind of run with them the whole time. If so I will buy anyone there choice out of vending machine :)

You are more than welcome to squad up with me. I have taken a few classes so I am sure I can repeat something that I have heard once or twice. Most people can see what someone is doign wrong but don't say anythign unless they are asked. So just ask for tips.

Ok thanks, that would be so helpful. Are you going to be at the h&h match on Sunday? if so I will give you my contact info.
