I'm really anxious for the passenger rail system to finally be finished linking Dallas to KC via Ponca, Wichita etc. From KC it goes to Jefferson City and then to StL and then out to the east coast somewhere. It would really make the drive up to see my in-laws in MO more bearable. Remember kids, they have "Bar Cars" on those big passenger trains. I too have traveled Europe by rail like Brian K above and found it enjoyable, cheap and not much of a hassle. If you going to visit family or friends, you can bum a ride or borrow a vehicle, if not, just get a cab or rent a car if your staying for awhile.
Trains and Subways were how America was going to conquer our size just like Europe had before, then the 1950's rolled around and The Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways popped up. This really flung the door wide open for the american auto industry and big oil as well. Who's aware of the massive subway system under LA? Not many people, it never even ran that I can recall, Got shut down by auto lobbiest before completion.
