I originally received my CCW in SC about 11 years ago. Made a mistake and received a DUI around 10 years ago. Moved out of state. Moved out of country. Now I am back in SC. I have had no issues the last 10 years and I want to get my CCW renewed.

Do I just go take the course again? Is there a separate approval needed? Do I let my instructor know? Any advice from someone knowledgable would be appreciated. Thanks.

Just sign up for a new class (assuming that your DUI didn't involve injury resulting in a felony). My instructor stated that a 3rd offense DUI would classify as a felony therefore stopping you from getting a CWP.Good Luck.Ken

+1 As long as it wasn't a felony just retake the class. If you are unsure do a backround check on yourself before you sign up for the class.

I could be interpreting wrong, but i was under the impression that a felony in and of itself does not prohibit possession of a pistol (and if you can legally possess you can obtain a CWP) but rather, just a conviction of a crime of violence and in the SC Laws, a crime of violence does not appear to encompass any DUI charges

The application is MUCH different that it was several years ago. You used to have to show traffic tickets up to 5 years ago. Now, here is all they ask:

Are you allowed by all applicable federal/state laws and court orders to possess a handgun? Yes No

? I am eligible for a South Carolina Concealed Weapons Permit pursuant to Sections 23?31?210/215, SC Code of Laws.
? I am not prohibited from possessing a handgun pursuant to Section 922, Title 18, United States Code.
? I will notify SLED immediately if I become prohibited by federal/state laws or court orders from possessing a handgun

Basically, SC does NOT impose any restrictions on having a CWP that exceeds Federal Laws for owning a handgun. So if you've passed a NICS check recently, then you're OK for SC.

Here's the link to the application: http://www.sled.sc.gov/documents/CWPApplicationForm.pdf

Thanks for all the quick help. It wasn't a felony and there wasn't personal injury. Just a one time stupid mistake. I just wanted to make sure if I just took the course again, there wouldn't be an issue since I am already in the system. Thanks again.
