Case stuck in chamber

Last weekend I had my new 9mm AR carbine out at the range for the first time, and everything was going great until what looks like half of a casing got stuck in the chamber. The bottom of the case sheared clean off, was ejected, and left a nice neat cylinder of brass seated in the camber. (See pictures)

I tried gently tapping it out with a brass cleaning rod inserted from the muzzle side, but it didn't seem to budge. Has anyone had this happen, and know a way to sort it out? Or should I just take this to a gunsmith and avoid going all redneck on it and ruining my chamber?

Can't help with the problem, but what ammo were you shooting? Looks like a stepped case that let loose.

This happens sometimes with 223 but it's the first one I've seen with 9mm

Try to take a bronze brush and push it through from the muzzle end. It might take a bigger brush(like a used .45 brush) but it might push it out. I have had a few separated cases and have been able to remove them all that way.

Thanks Tony, I'll see if I can find one of the 9mm variety. Probably have to have it shipped so I may try the bronze brush method while I wait.

Mostly freedom munitions. Reman 147gr and new 115gr.

Try the above first. If that doesn't work push the brush in from the breach end so that 1/4"-1/2 of the brush passes through muzzle end of the the case. Then pull it back out. The bristles will be a at a sharper angle and have a better chance of biting into the case.

Do you still have the head of the case? I've seen stepped cases stamped Ammoland, IMT, and FM. Below is a picture of a piece of FM stamped brass.

Using the bronze brush sounds like it could work, going from the breach so that the bristles are angled back is a good idea.

I looked for the case head when this happened but couldn't find it in the gravel. Would have been interesting to see it.

Just beat the **** out of it. It will be fine.
The right sized hammer will fix any problem.

I'm out of town for work but I'll post the results of of my efforts with a bronze brush when I get back.

I'm still building my first 9mm AR so have not had this problem yet.

What size tap would you recommend? A 3/8" fine thread tapered tap? It would be good to have one on hand just in case.

I spent the better part of an hour searching for a 9mm broken shell extractor and I don't think anyone has it on the market.

(I've carried a 5.56 broken shell extractor in my 3-gun toolbox for years and have never had the chance to use it, but if I need it, its there.)
