It not for your hand its so you cant inadvertantly rest your barrel on the supporting surface. I saw some dude doing it this weekend at 3 Mils right with his 12" handguard.

Looks like I'll be able to tell you about the Loki XL in the near future I just need to find me a std. ol' mil-spec barrel nut. I hope it works out well if not I just dumped some money on poo but it's Loki so it should be a good one. Later,

I have pretty long arms I can reach out and grasp the comp on my 18" Nordic upper with just a little stretch. So I could probably use a 16.5" or 17" handguard. Don't now if it would be an advantage as I have never had one to test out but I have been told the farther you have your hand down the barrel the more control you have so if I could comfortably do it it might be an advantage.
