I just bought my first firearm a few days ago and I plan to take my cwp class in a few weeks. I have searched and searched for an answer , but no luck. is it legal once i have my cwp to carry a gun in a holster on my hip with my shirt tail covering the grip, or do I have to have an inside the waste holster? thank you for all your information and advice.

As long as the shirt is hiding it, then no issue what so ever. The key to proper CWP carry is to not see the weapon. The law doesn't dictate holster placement. I should add that you don't want any over obvious "printing" of your holstered weapon. It shouldn't be obvious to a casual observer that you are carrying.

I'm not a lawyer so take this with a grain of salt.

If your shirt is only covering the grip and not the holster you may have some issues. Concealed means concealed and pay attention to printing. Don't carry a 1911 and then wear an underarmor tight top and not expect to be stopped.

Per SC Code 23-31-205:

"Concealable weapon' means a firearm having a length of less than twelve inches measured along its greatest dimension that must be carried in a manner that is hidden from the public view in normal wear of clothing except when needed for self-defense, defense of others, and the protection of real or personal property."

There's no requirement for a type of holster. You can carry in a pocket holster, inside the belt holster, outside the belt holster, shoulder holster, smart carry, thunderwear, off-body carry (purse/murse) or whatever floats your fancy. You can even carry "mexican carry" (no holster) although I don't suggest that as it is unsafe.

Realize that SC is one of only a handful of states (around 7, last I checked) that don't permit "open carry." So SC, FL, TX, and the usual anti-rights states (MA, Cali, etc) are pretty much the exception to the rest of the country re open carry. Only in a few states -- like SC -- is inadvertent exposure of your lawfully carried sidearm a crime.

Thunderwear. Too funny.

A minimalist holster for Mexican carry are those that cover the trigger guard and have a string/cord that connects the "holster" to your belt or belt loop. When you draw the weapon from concealment, the cord pulls the holster off the trigger guard. Reholstering is a little trickier, though.

I asked a cop a similar question once, "Even if the butt of my gun is barely showing, can I carry it in my back pocket?"

His answer: "No."

Moral of the story: make sure your weapon is not evidently known to be on your person. Conceal it and conceal it well.

That being said, I've routinely carried my XD SC in my front pocket in Wallie World, and at the Greer City Park, and had no one look at me funny. Now, it did somewhat imprint, and I can't really draw fast from my pocket, but it is considered legal and will do in a pinch.

There are concealed carry systems that are a belt-holster-ammo pouch combination; they're very pricey, but look super awesome. The gun rides higher than if it were in a IWB style holster, almost as if it were in an outside holster. Sorry, but I don't remember the name (a friend showed it to me at work).

Simple answer, Concealed means concealed. Make sure it can't be seen. other than that it up to your discretion how to carry.

Desert Eagle.
HA! Good luck concealing THAT! There's a Taurus 738 for sale on the forum you might want to look into :)
my new ccw carry pistol is a 7inch Ruger Redhawk .44 mag i'll get pics up soon of the rig i'll use to carry

I would not worry excessively about printing. A dark colored shirt with pattern (like a Hawaiian shirt) goes a long way towards minimizing that. Plus the SC statute does not necessarily forbid printing. You can even wear a tshirt that says "I am packing a handgun!" With an arrow. Just so long as the firearm can't be observed. Besides you would be surprised at how few people will notice printing. Try open carrying in a freer state--many people don't even notice THAT so they sure aren't going to notice even moderate printing...

Good luck with the desert eagle... I carry a beretta 96 or full size sw Mp just fine with a dragon leatherworks flatjack or a crossbreed superficial. But the de is a big weapon...

been a while since i held a desert eagle but i know they are big.

in my cwp class it seems like i remember the measurement was barrel to butt and had to be less than 11 inches.

has that changed? isnt a desert eagle bigger than that?

23-31-210 - (6) "Concealable weapon" means a firearm having a length of less than twelve inches measured along its greatest dimension that must be carried in a manner that is hidden from public view in normal wear of clothing except when needed for self-defense, defense of others, and the protection of real or personal property.

As long as you stay away from the 10" barrel, you should be OK with a DE stuck in your pants.

I've assumed everyone gets the joke. Nobody is carrying a Desert Eagle.

Back to the OP. What kind of gun did you buy?

Hahah -- missed that! I was reading on a small tablet and missed the poster...

I think the worst thing about CCW'ing a DE would probably be the weight. Three and a half pounds off my belt, yuck. At that rate I might as well consider lugging an AR around...
