I had a 4" GP100 fall in my lap this morning at an absolutley smoking price. I'd like to get your advice on using it in a game here and there. I understand USPSA revo rules, I know its not the best USPSA gun not being moon clipped etc. I think it falls just fine into SSR with speedloaders, and maybe the production like ICORE division.

I'm not against putting a bit of cash into it, but don't want to take away from the fact that its a carryable full size 357 mag. That being said, I don't like hammer spurs on DA revolvers so that's likely going away no matter what.

G.T., you could always cut it for moons if you wanted. The upside is that with Hearthco moon clips AND Starline brass there is NO faster way to reload it. The downside is that the Hearthco clips, while being night and day better than any others are costly and you are sort of limited on brass brands (Bubber can better help you here).

If it were me I'd chop the hammer, polish the piss out of the internals, put in a $20 Wilson spring kit, change the sights to your liking and find you some good speedloaders. Again Bubber is the expert on what's best, I don't know if Comp IIIs or Jetloaders are made for these or not. But those are what you'd want if going that route. Maybe they are the same as L frames?

Another upside is that you can shoot magnum brass, .38 Special, .38 Long Colt or .38 Short Colt brass.

Harold Nicholson worked over my 6 inch gp100 and did a pretty good job smoothing up the action.

I'm not sure how machining the cylinder for moon clips would do for loading special cases. I'd probably need to use SC brass to get it to load really quickly right? Before going the moon clip route I'd likely just go for the 40/10mm conversion and be done with it. That's also a bit spendy.

Any recommendations on sights? All I really see are Bowen Classic arms and Hiviz. Bowen offers a blank that I could make a lot like a Dawson 1911 front sight.

In what way?

I know that Starline claims their .38 Special, Long Colt and Short Colt are all the same just a different overall length. And SC is probably the way to go. The shorter case does load faster and you can use 9mm load data.

If you cut it for clips it's still going to headspace off the rim like it's supposed to. Unlike a rimless cartridge which does headspace off the clip.

Ive heard the long special cases don't load as well as something like the SC cases when using moon clips. But I guess since it is a clip gun buying new cases doesn't hurt too bad.

For sure! I wouldn't be shooting .45 except for those clips. You get all you brass back and it's YOUR brass so if you are inclined you can keep track of the number of firings on it.

FYI, Clements Customs re-chambers GP100s to 10mm. He claims you can shoot factory ammo too. I'm pretty sure the GP100 is enough of a tank to hold up. Just a thought...

Who is Harold Nicholson? Does he have a website?

A few months ago I read all of Roger's blog on http://4wheelguns.com/ , and plan to start shooting a revolver as part of the rotation sometime in the future. Seems like a hot ticket.

He is my gunsmith in Norman. He mainly shoots ICORE. His website is getting a make over but its www.150x.com

He doesn't have his revolver work on the site but he's done my last three Smith's and my ruger.

His number is (405) 620-1570

He's also my smith for anything that I can't do myself due to lack of equipment. And I'd add that Harold is a damn good smith too.

Harold has my GP100 that he is converting to 40S&W. I hope to shoot it at the MCC. I considered a lot of options and settled on the 40 conversion because I figured it would be best to load for a caliber that I already own. In my simple, little mind the most intriguing unaswered question is whether or not I could handle shooting a couple of hundred rounds of major 38 short colt or 38 long colt through a revolver.

I have seen Harold load his revolver using "close to long colt" length cases very quickly with speed loaders in an L frame. I have also seen Roger and the pretty Roger make great reloads on GP100s and L frames. I have only tried it in a 627 with moonclips. I think that either case will load well, but the long colt has a better chance of shooting more accurately. The Gobers settled on a long colt load on their 627s.

I hear that you can also get a cylinder converted to 38 Super.

The whole long colt/short colt is up for debate. Doug Carden commercially loads short colt with 170 grain bullets with good accuracy. I think its a combonation of OAL, powder, crimp, and bullet weight... I am going to play with this concept this summer, may shoot open at the southern regional.

good god....

He buys an open gun, and now he's playing cowboy???

somebody wants an excuse to bust out those chaps.
