California Custom build purchase

I live in the Peoples Republic of Californian unfortunately. California has a law that a pistol must be on the CA DOJ Roster of approved pistols to be sold by a GS in California. My question is given that a custom built pistol is a one off and would be purchased directly from the builder (not located in California). Can a custom built pistol be sent to a local California FFL dealer for transfer to the purchaser given it is a fee based transfer and not a purchase. This custom build would not be on the CA DOJ Roster of approved pistols since it is not a production pistol.

The 1911 gunsmith making your gun is selling to you in CA and subject to CA's restrictions. Think of the transfer as just a hand off to you once you meet state and fed requirements for that hand off. The gunsmith is not selling to your receiving FFL.
 
A handgun in Cali must be on the roster - there's a couple exceptions to that, but for the sake of this thread I will not go into detail.

If a pistol smith owns a 1911 himself and customizes it, as long as it's on the roster, you can buy it from him and transfer it in without a problem. His customizations do not affect what the model name is from the manufacturer. For example: Pistolsmith owns a Springfield Pc9102 custom carry. He's customized it and you want to buy it. Since the 9102 is on the roster, you can buy it and transfer it in to Cali.

If it's of age to be curio and relic, and you have a c&r license, it's been customized...you can still transfer it in as it is still c&r by its manufacture date associated with the serial number.

If pistolsmith customizes a Colt series 70, you can not own it in Cali because it is not on the roster.

The gun must be on the roster, what the smith does or does not do has no effect on what is approved for sale via the roster.

Of course there is always the possibility that you own a handgun that is on the roster (or is not - depending on if you brought it in when you moved, etc). You send it off to pistolsmith to be customized, he works on it and sends it right back to you. This is by far the path of least resistance.
 
I don't know how to respond to this without getting into politics and local state government. I will say that California has some of the most illogical and restrictive laws that only continue to get worse. Honestly all these laws do is make it more time consuming, and bottleneck legal law abiding citizens when they are going about their daily lives. Anyone who thinks that laws like this are not about gun registration is only kidding themselves. Lets face it folks, criminals aren't going to abide by laws, hence forth just yet another ridiculous law. Glad I don't live in California. Half my family did since the late 50's but through the years most of them have left because of the way things have changed for the worse. Same thing is happening in Illinois where we live and we have been here all of my 70 years. We are selling the house in the next few months and leaving. In response to Fogbank's post he is 100% right on spot with calling it The Peoples Republic of California. So glad most of my family left a once good state. Just sayin...
 
I'm a retired police lieutenant whose family has been in our hometown for 5 generations. Watching all that is and has been going on in California made our decision for us. I retired five years ago, and my wife retired three ago. Last February we folded our tents and headed out to Arizona. The sense of freedom, particularly as it pertains to guns, personal freedom, taxes and regulation is unbelievable. The only concern is that those who move here from California leave their liberal politics behind.
 
Let me take this opportunity to suggest moving to Georgia, no crazy gun laws, more rain than California and a lot less snow than Illinois. You also can buy a nice rural home where you can have your own gun ranges and have money left over from the sale of your home in Illinois or California to spend on your shooting hobby! Most likely lots of money!

You CAN OWN and POSSESS your off roster custom series 70 Colt in crapifornia you just can not transfer it to a gun store. YOU CAN DO A FACE TO FACE PRIVATE TRANSFER at a gun store or, (parish the thought) sell it like a free American.

BUT........crapifornians.....quit being such pussies!!!!!! Stop participating in registration!!!!! You have a fifth amendment right to transfer your private property.

If you really want your gun registered with the state like a good obedient subject, buy it from a private party then contact DOJ and tell them you have an unregistered gun you want to register. They will be thrilled to send you a form to register it and it costs half what it costs at an ffl + NO 10 day wait! (Ask for form idiot 9)

F the state! Registration equals confiscation ALWAYS. PERIOD!!

And now they are even admitting it.

NOTE: in crapifornia there is probably no county that will allow your customized series 70 Colt to be listed as the specified firearm on a CCW

Fogbank, I too lived in the people's republic before escaping to, a better place. If you're law enforcement, you may be able to get your pistol, but I think you're going to be SOL if you're not. California has written their laws to fulfill their anti-gun agenda, not promote the public safety. I've been out for a few years, but a gun shop (if there are any left) should be able to tell you.

Any gunsmith, firearms, firearms accessory, or ammo manufacturer that still remains in California is either a masochist that is truly into pain, or not bright enough to realize what's going on in that state.

The reason to keep a gun store in crapifornia is to mine the state for collectibles, pay nothing for them (by pleading unsaleability and process) and sell them on gunbroker.com

That is why the attitude and customer service sucks so bad in commiefornia. They don't give a crap about your repeat business.

As I happily left California (the fair land of fruits and nuts) many years ago and make my home in central Texas, I may be one of the buyers of the relics or custom builds that now seem to be flowing out of the state. I still believe that it is past time for any sane person still within the borders of that state to be considering pulling up stakes
 
As a non-LEO californian, I normally would purchase an on roster 1911 (usually a Springfield Mil Spec) just so I could have a frame to send off to a noteworthy gunsmith to have that full custom build become a reality. That's the best I can do out here in California. LEO's are exempt from the roster and can purchase whatever handgun they want (within reason), including aftermarket 1911 frames.
 
amlew1911 has the best course (and the course of least resistance) to obtain a "Custom" 1911. Once you buy the "on list" SA then everything else is between you and your builder......
John Galt is also correct about quarantines, but.........it will probably be for a much more lethal disease than leprosy....

Let's just leave it at patriotic, a lover of what our Founding Fathers intended for us to have. I'm a white Kalifornian and I know the California socialists don't like Alan Keyes, the 'real' Reverend Martin Luther King, Walter Williams, Ben Carson (brain surgeon, M.D.), etc...
Two of which I voted for in the CA primaries when they ran. Not Obama either time.
So just being white is not the criteria. It's freedom lovers anywhere that they don't like.
