I need some advise about bullet wt vs barrel twist. What will work best for a 20-24" barrel to shoot 55-70 gn bullets?

40-55gr you want 1x9 or faster. I think for a 20"-24" you may want 1x12 for the lighter short bullets.

As i understand, its not the bullet weight that is the determining factor, but the length of the bullet.

1x9 will stabilize the 40-69gr usually, and sometimes up to the 75gr.

1x8 will stabilize the 55-75 and sometimes the 80+

1x7 will sometimes do 55, and almost always 62 and up

I have 1x9 Stainless Wilson bull barrel that will stabilize the 75gr Hornady Match bullets just fine, and a friends 1x9 chrome lined keyholes the same rounds like crazy.

Err...

If we're talking about .22 cal stuff:

1/12 will stabilize up to 55gr
1/9 will stabilize up to 69gr (and sometimes up to 75gr)
1/8 and 1/7 will stabilize up to 80gr
1/6.5 will stabilize the 90gr Sierra pencils, but might blow up the lighter stuff due to rotating too fast

Depending on what you need, you might have to get a custom barrel built, there aren't many factory fast twist .223 bolt guns. Or .243 for that matter.

Faster twist will always stabilize the lighter bullets, but potentially at less accuracy and the possibility of blowing them up. That's not common unless we're talking 40gr super fast out of a 1/7 or tighter.

1/8 and 1/7 would all work for 55-70 gr bullets in .224 dia. 1/9 would probably work just fine at 70gr in a 20-24" bolt gun.

Yes to that statement. The new ammo like the amax, sst's, and others that are are very sleek for higher BC, and will work in twists not designed for that particular bullet weight.
I read a very detailed report the other day where they shot hundreds of rounds through different twists, and came to that conclusion. I meant to save that to my favorites as I knew the subject would come up.

Bullet weight is still the a lot of the main factor, but the test showed that the longer bullet works in twists that that weight wasn't designed for.

I'm building a custom rifle, AR, and will be ordering what will work best for the rounds we load. This is for my neighbor (best friend) and for some reason (higher distance shooting) he wants to go longer than a standard barrel and get "24-26" which I equated to being 20-24

1:8 to answer your question
Thanks! :)

Those were the barrels I was going to recommend. WOA makes great stuff!

Apparently there is some sort of legal hoopla over spiral fluting. I believe White Oak will flute barrels when purchased.

Yes, here's what their site says:

White Oak Armament Website said:
  • When purchased with a barrel, a standard bolt assembly can be purchased for $50 (normally $56) and will be headspaced to your barrel.
  • Straight fluting is available for $100.
  • Barrels come with a polished stainless finish. If you prefer we can bead blast the barrel ($15) or give it a matte black duracoat finish ($40).

If you don't need 24" plus, you can get the WOA SDM barrel, that comes fluted, and is a lot lighter weight profile.
