Some of you may have seen my threads lately about picking a rifle and optic. Well, my choices have been made, so I thought I would tell you what I did. I will also relate some of what I learned, and how I could have done it on a smaller budget. I sold a rifle, and had $1300. My goal was a gun that would be an excellent hunting rifle, but also excellent for shooting long range. 1000 yards was not my goal, but I did want it to be possible. Easy to carry in the field, light enough to walk around all day with (your definition of this may vary, but I hunt with an M1 Garand and typically walk a few miles while hunting) and most of all, I wasn't looking to skimp on stuff. The most I had ever spent on an Optic before was $179... All that being said, I could easily have spent the $1300 on just an optic, or just a rifle. So my goal was to not skimp, but stay on budget. I pestered a couple of people for advice, and really appreciate the feedback I got.

First, the rifle.
Years ago I had a .223 heavy barrel Savage 10fp, with a 20 inch barrel and a BSA scope. I sold it to get an AR, and don't regret it, but do miss it. I did learn one thing, the two 24" heavy barrel guns I had in the past were tough to shoot offhand. Dropping 4" of barrel makes a world of difference.

I knew I wanted a Savage, but didn't want to rule out anything. Bud's Gun Shop had several really nice options. One was a Remington, the others where Savages. I really didn't like the Remington Hogue stock (got to handle one at Sportsworld) and had been told the Savage Accustocks were way better than the old ones that I had used before had been. There was a cheaper Savage option, but I really like the fluting, and slightly shorter barrel of the more expensive option, so I went with this:http://www.budsgunsh...ts_id/411552143

For a scope, after a bit of online research and asking questions on here, one brand stood way out. Vortex scopes seem to have an awesome reputation, and really stand by their products. I wanted a Mil/Mil setup, with exposed turrets and was going to buy this one:http://www.midwayusa...t-reticle-matte

It was on backorder, which turned out to be good for me. I put up a wanted to buy on another forum, and got very good deal on a better scope. I paid the same for this:http://www.midwayusa...a-reticle-matte
That I would have paid for the other one.

Those two purchases got me right at $1236. That left me a bit short on money for rings and a base. So I went with the cheaper Weaver 20MOA base, and a set of Weaver Tactical rings. A buddy has those on a rifle of his that he has shot a lot without any problem, so here's hoping for the best. I figure a .308 isn't a real hard recoiling rifle so with a bit of blue locktite I should be ok. If not, new rings and a base aren't crazy expensive so I will save up for them.

All in all, this build is literally $1324. So I went $24 over budget. I could have gotten a cheaper but probably equally capable rifle http://www.budsgunsh...08 THREADED BBL
And saved about $130. I did think long and hard about it, and could have used that money for nicer mounts, ammo, a bipod, nicer scope, or any number of other things. I could have saved a bit of money on a scope as well, and still got a very nice and capable Vortex. I chose to go ahead and spend the extra money on the main components because..... well they were what I wanted, and I already have a bunch of .308 components to get started playing with.

Baby number 6 is due within a month, so shooting time is going to be very limited till Feb.-March ish, so I figured the smaller purchases could trickle in over time.

I will post pics when everything comes in and is assembled, can't wait to also be posting range reports. Hope this might help anyone who is looking to do something similar. I have a buddy of mine who is looking to build a rifle, and his budget is crazy awesome, and while my rifle might not be as fancy, I think it will be able to hold it's own, and be a great learning tool.

Looks like solid choices. Be sure to show us some pics of your first groups with that rifle! Savage rifles are notorious for shooting tight groups.

That 1 in 11.25" twist will love some 175gr Sierra Match Kings sitting on 43 grains of Varget.

Thinking about going with the Hornady 178s, but not sure yet. Have a handful of odds and ends to play with before I start shopping.

I tried the A-Max and never really got any OMG results like I have with the 175SMK's but ya never know you might have awesome luck. I don't know if my barrel is slow but I'm loving me some 44.5gr of RL-15 under a 175SMK :) like always work up if you try it! many rifles seem to shoot pretty fair groups with this load.

My little ol' Savage 223 is my go to when testing loads, it's just freaky accurate and I know the pasture maggots out West rather hate the rifle hehe several buddies have gotten into LR with a Savage Mod 10 in 308 that I know, my Savage 308 well most of the action is Savage as it started life as a 243. The Savage rifles are just so easy to work on! nothing pretty to look at but dang they shoot well.

I've never owned a Vortex scope but have heard nothing but good things about them, I'm a MOA/MOA guy but as long as you get things figured out who cares it's all about hitting things after all. You seem to have a good platform going there and looking forward to the pics. Best of luck to ya! Later,

Kirk

Forgive my abysmal picture taking skills, hopefully I am better shooting the rifle than I am shooting pics of the rifle.

I like it. I gots to get me another bolt action, and I think Savage is where I'm leaning.
Post pics of your targets when you get em.

Very nice...I recenty bought a Savage 116FCSS 30-06 with the Accu-Stock and Accu-Trigger. I too chose the Vortex but i went with the one step up from your first choice Vortex Viper HS LR 4-16x50 Dead Hold BDC scope. My problem has been scope ring bases. The long action is just long enough that there's not enough tube length to fit. I have the two independant bases instead of the rail so i'm curious how you like it? I didn't like how it covered the top part of the rifle but, as a result, i haven't been able to mount my scope. I was trying to find a set of stainless steel extended bases for my SS Weaver rings but that's not worked out well either. Bass Pro has a set but i'd have to order them and I don't even know if the holes will line up. I'm pretty sure this rifle will be a tack driver if i can ever getthe scope mounted.

I think one piece bases are a pain in the a$$ with an internal magazine. That being said I have them on all my bolt actions, but then again they are all magazine fed so no issue there.

I really like the 1 piece bases. Some people say they help with the rigidity of the receiver, and that may be the case but I just prefer them from the options it gives for scope placement. If mine didn't have a detachable mag, I could see how it might make things a bit more complicated, but I would still use it.

I'm a fan of the one piece bases, it takes a touch of getting used to loading but if this Redneck can figure it out anyone can! I can't say enough good things about Ken Farrell bases and Warne rings, I've beat on then pretty good and they have never moved (knock on wood) not real cheap but then again good stuff tends to cost more but oh so worth it. Just my thoughts. Later,

Kirk

I wanted to go with a nicer set of rings and a better base, but my budget wouldn't allow it. I have had good luck with the Weaver stuff on other guns though.

Kevin, my last build took almost 3 years to complete as I was on a TIGHT budget! I'm still cheap but the day I got all my goodies in a pile and started threading and putting it together it was so awesome, the first few shots were just as awesome! I did a few things I would have saved my cash on but hey I know some good guys and they cut me a little break on some of the work I couldn't do. I've run across a few of those ugly ass Savage rifles that will hold right with my build matter of a fact I own one just in a different stock. The Savage rifles have really taken affordability and accuracy to a new level, take a look at the others who are copying the barrel nuts and triggers. Believe it or not I have some Mauser action rifles that will shoot rather well, one build on a Mauser action is the only rifle I've hit a target past 1K

Not sure where you can really stretch the legs on your 308 up in your area but might find someone who has access to some of the highline right of ways, just saying those poles are pretty good to stretch a cable across and hang a gong :) Later,

Kirk

+1 on one peice bases, I personally have never found a set of rings I like that would mount on anything but a one peice base. I've broken to many sets of cheap rings that go straight on to the reciever. I'll probably never buy anything but tactical style rings ever again. And like Kevin said, it gives a little wiggle room on scope placement. Which I personally think is something a lot of people don't pay enough attention too. Im convinced theres tons of guys out there who are compromising their accuracy because their rifle isn't set up right, thus making them muscle their head or whatever part of their body into position.

have you figured out a load for this rifle yet? shot a ladder test? i'm not even going to tell you what it will like to eat, because each rifle is diferent. barrel harmonics and whatnot.
