best muzzle jump eliminator?

I know I'm opening a can of worms

AR's don't usually have a lot of recoil to start with. Most brakes for the AR seem to just make them louder. What I'm looking for is something that will tame the muzzle jump of my 6.8SPC for faster follow-up shots. I've even considered sleeving the A2-style flash hider to just have the top port open.

Thoughts? Availability in 5/8-24 thread?

This has become an issue since I actually found a barrel for my wife's build, and I want to trim that to 14.75" or so and weld the brake/hider/device on so I won't be able to experiment after the fact.

Mike, my primary has a 1 inch Battlecomp that I've been very happy with. Buddy of mine purchased a BCM 14.5 and had the 1.5 Battlecomp pinned by BCM. I liked the recoil mitigation without much of an increase in muzzle blast so much, I purchased one. They are not inexpensive though. :cry:

just in case you want a non brake, i bought a birdcage for my 762x39 bbl and then bought a QD mount for the suppressor im getting.

never fired through it.

i have a break on my first AR i got at a gun show. it is supposed to be more of a recoil reducer. they called it a russian muzzle break. wow i happen to have a pic ready.

Both of those links are for 6.8s. I use the full size version for one of my 5.56 rifles and I love it. Can't beat the price, either. The fullsize one is probably more in line with what you want. It looks great and works very well. It also has a money back offer, so if you don't like it, send it back.

I like my AAC 51T Brakeout. It comes in .30cal 5/8x24 (works on .300BLK, 6.5G 6.8 etc)

At one time or another I have used pretty much all of the listed devices. All are good. I have the AAC's on several rifles for suppressor use. My favorite by far is the BattleComp. It's not nearly as loud as the others, actually helps with the flash a bit, and kills recoil and muzzle climb. The first time I shot it my second rounds were actually lower because I was so used to pushing into the rifle to control the recoil. My favorite .30 cal has been the Primary Arms series, although I have yet to shoot a .30 cal BattleComp. Here is a video of their FSC series on a 7.62 AKM. Now I was only about 18 yards back, but you can see that my secondary shots are pretty close.

I have a levang-type headed my way. If that doesn't work, I guess I'll start saving for the PWS or Battlecomp.

Not to be Debbie Downer, but honestly don't know if the Levang will do what you want it to. I had a linear compensator and I directed the blast forward (good with noise on an SBR, I suppose) but not so much for compensation. I only got mine because I didn't have to index it when I would shoot unsuppressed (thread on can).

Don't discount the Rainier...seriously. It's $50 and if you don't like it you can make up the majority of the price online or keep it for another build.

The .30 cal Levang was $40, so even if I don't like it I can move it and not lose any (or much) money. It does seem like the PWS and Battlecomp are the way to go.

Just for sh!ts and grins, will a bayonet still mount over a battlecomp?

I have a DPMS Levang compensator on my Sig 556. In all honesty, I think it is more about your grip and stance and how aggressive you are being on your rifle than the brake/compensator/ whatever muzzle device you have. But it does help. Compared to the standard birdcage that came on this, I did notice a difference. Only pain in the ass part about this thing was screwing it on and making sure it is tight enough.

I had a KIES Linear comp similar to the Levang. The only difference I noticed was noise projection. Ditched it for the Rainier XTC, which is why I recommended it. Didn't want to pay $100 plus for marginally higher performance with a Battlecomp and the $50 for the XTC was cheap and well spent.

Hey Tigerstripe what does Andy have on his M16? That thing shoots nice and flat.

I put a Levang on the AUG to redirect the muzzle blast, which it does, I just don't think it helps with muzzle rise.

we both have the QD mount for a YHM suppressor on our autos.

we also have the phantom flash hiders on other uppers because they really hide a flash.

they are really the same thing but the QD has threads for a can.

Andy has a lot to do with it. he is good with that weapon.

we will be sitting 100 yds from his 3 steel plates and he can fire 2 or 3 rd bursts with a 22 upper and you will hear every shot ring the plates. same with 556 its just harder to hear the first ones cause of blasts from the 3rd.

So got to compare the levang to the regular birdcage today at the range. The levang clearly took out most of the muzzle jump, translating it into more of a push straight back. Noise was negligibly the same - neither I or Paco could hear a difference with earmuffs on.

This one is of unknown providence - not the DPMS (it's 5/8x24), not a Kies, or any of the similar ones I've seen. Apparently came off a .30 cal bolt rifle. Tightened right up with a pin wrench. I'll get pics when I clean the rifle.

As for noise downrange of the rifle, who cares? :twisted:
