With my 21st birthday a couple weeks ago I am finally at the age to where I can purchase my own hand gun. I was just wondering what you guys would suggest for a first pistol?

What the intended purpose?

It would be for just target practice not really for hunting or self defense. I would like to eventually try 3-gun competition.

Glock 17 or 19
M&P 2.0 9 or 2.0 9 compact
XDm 9

If I could have one handgun it would be a Glock 19.

I did shoot cousins M&P 2.0 compact and liked it quite a bit too.

Xdm 9 has been pretty awesome for me. Try some of the suggestions if possible to see what feels best in your hands, or head out to one of the shoots offer some ammo or money to try their gear before dropping some cash.

If you are not going to carry it, Glock 17.

You're welcome.

Glock 17 if you are not going to carry it. Glock 19 if you think you might. The M&P 2.0 is nice as well. These are pretty easy to find holsters for too.

Be sure you try out any gun before you buy one. It needs to fit your hands well.

For carry would Glock 19...you're welcome.

So, with the suggestions rolling, in before you buy, you really should try & go to a gun range that has rentals. Rent a model you're considering buying as well as a couple competing brands of the same class of gun. Try them all and see what suits you.
