ar15?

If you want a range toy then why not get an AR-style rifle in .22 LR?

If you want something in centerfire then I'd consider the following possibilities:
A) Get an AK. Seriously, if you want a centerfire semiauto rifle that you can also to hunt, and you don't plan on messing with it much, with I think you'll be about as happy with an AK. The ammo is cheaper and the round is more suitable for hunting (7.62x39 is pretty similar to 30-30, ballistically speaking). You can get a decent AK for a few hundred bucks less than a comparable AR and ammo is cheaper as well.
B) Get an entry level AR as cheap as you can, maybe used if possible.
C) Pony up around $800-1000 and get an AR that is close to top-shelf, at least in the aspects you care about. Little known trick: if you buy the whole rifle, then you pay the 11% federal Pittman Robertson tax on all of it (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittman-Ro ... ration_Act). If you buy a lower and then a seperate upper then you only pay the 11% on the lower, which is the cheaper half anyways. You can actually "roll your own" AR (buy a finished lower, then slap an upper on it) and save money with minimal time investment. Or you can put one together yourself and get exactly what you want; I put together my first AR over the course of a college football game (3 hours) and I'm not very mechanically minded.

Example thousand dollar rifle which is pretty close to top shelf:
$300 MOE PSA lower (http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.ph ... ition.html)
$500 top-class BCM upper (http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-BFH- ... %20bfh.htm)
$120 bolt carrier group (http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/AR-15-Bo ... s-s/34.htm)
$30 MOE handguard (http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/AR-15-Ha ... s-s/50.htm)
$70 Daniel Defense iron sights (https://danieldefense.com/components-pa ... sight.html)

Assembly is no more complicated than what you do to field strip for cleaning.

Speaking of warranty, S&W is one of the few that only has a 1 year warranty. Others such as Stag have a lifetime warranty.

I think you may be stuck in a time warp from a few years back when this was true. Because the M&P rifle I recently bought has a lifetime warranty.

Huh............guess I'm the only person wondering why we have 3 pages of AR talk under GD instead of Black Rifles. Great thread but it's in the wrong place mods.

If you're concerned with resale value then a factory gun with all the paperwork and box is the only way to go. Some searching turns up stuff like a Colt 6920 M4A1 SOCOM Carbine for $1225.00. That said I sold the last of my factory rifles a couple of years back and all I own now are "parts" guns.

Do I miss having a pretty Colt rifle? Sure I do but I never shot the damn thing, whereas I can beat on my others without feeling guilty.

I have a delton AR15, I paid right about $850 for it, but I never hear anyone talk about it.
I love it, its very reliable, very nice quality and I never had any issues with it.

I don't see how different it would be from a "top" AR, can anyone explain to me?

I thinkits the type of materials they use, tighter tolerances, etc.

If you buy a RedJacket AR-15, they put their logo on EVERYTHING so no one can miss the fact that you're shooting a RedJacket. (Standard location, charging handle, dust cover, safety selector, I'm sure if the magpul stuff didn't have their logo on it already it would of had the RJF logo on it too)

It's the little things as they say like shot peening the BCG, chrome lined barrels and magna flux inspections of various parts. The appearance of the final machining of the lower will vary also.
I'm sure there are more differences but those come to mind first.

is DPMS junk? No.can a DPMS make the avg. shooter that puts 20rds a month through it happy yes it can.is it accurate? YES very!.
can it hold up to running hard, not cleaning, and extremely high round count each weekend?

NO thats what the difference is between DPMS and COLT.

This.

cheap guns are reliable because most folks don't HAMMER ON THEM.
an AR-15 creates a LOT OF HEAT & recoil.
when parts get hot, and start shaking around, bad things happen.

my WIFE had smoke coming out/off her AR barrel a while back, I had shot a clip, a buddy had shot a few clips, and then, i think she shoot two clips as fast as she could (I had them loaded) and it was HOT HOT HOT. the barrel gets HOT just in normal plinking.
i assume the smoke was from over lubrication by her personal gunsmith, but opinions vary on his ability :(

i think that's where all the ballpeening/staking the parts together makes a difference. it don't break when it gets hot.

many cheap guns have high round counts and good reports, but even more cheap brands have low round counts & bad reports.
i have "cheap" AR's, but I don't run several hundreds through them in a weekend.

Bottom line, snowman, check with Bob first. Nothing but praises on this forum.
Subject: Bob@UAG
Bob@UAG yep thats a great recomendation bigfutz!!!!in fact i was over there today..he has a Spikes AR-15 that i think would be PERFECT for snowman!Spikes are good rifles at a price a working man can afford.he also has Stag AR-15'S in stock but my personal preferance would be the Spikes, they are both good rifles even though i don't like AR's with animals rollmarked on the side of them.he also has a DPMS in stock(get the Spikes)the DPMS has a panther rollmarked on it..hehe all jokes aside google Spikes quailty Snowman= good stuff.google Stag quality= good stuff.

Hey to all the members of the Palmettoshootersforum here in Chas. I'm John Mc and have attended two of your shoots and have never had so much fun. Well I dropped the hammer today and got my first real Black Gun. I was able to pick-up a Colt LE6920 AR-15/ w/ the Law enforcement & Military sales only on the right side roll stamping. The guy had it since 2006 and never took it out of the box. Got it for $1100 NIB and a bunch of Magpul acc's and a nice Blackhawk padded gun case. Sold off the Sites Spectre to get it but I'm so excited. Steve I'm probably going to drive you crazy with questions. I've owned at least 50 guns over the years but shooting with ya'll is so much fun I had to get in. I've always loved my Norinco AK-47 pre-ban in 5.56 but this should be a bunch fun. Thanks for the ear and look forward to shooting with ya'll. John Mc

This is what I want been talkin to the guys out there via email http://newfrontierarmory.com/catalog/in ... s_id=34562
just a hint of advice(all AR15 manf clam to be "mil-spec")a small number meet military standards.this company you linked above has a 1/8 twist m4profile stainless steel barrel...ok milspec calls for a carbon steel (what type of carbon steel i don't have that info wrtten down) 1/7 twist chrome lined hp/mp tested barrel...get my drift? i can tell you SPIKES meets the military stadard.a stainless steel barrel is a great barrel for accuracy (if made right).the chromelined carbon steel barrel is not as accurate as the Stainless steel (on avg)but adds reliablity in alot of ways it lasts longer before accuracy drops off the chrome lined chamber makes for better extraction and is MUCH easier to clean and can handel being fired 1000's of rounds with out being cleaned and the barrel will not be harmed. so research the info i have provided on the net and find out what rifle gives you what you want in a price you can afford.

John: Glad to see you Posting on the Forum...

I am also glad you got yourself an AR-15. You got a good one with the Colt...Sorry the 5.56 AK is gone..It was a nice shooter...

If I can be of any help with the AR, just let me know...

Steve
