A while back when I posted a pic of my LMT on a forum someone commented that I should move the scope forward. Which I did some but a large reason why it was in that position was because the stock that was on it looked like a carbine stock but looks can be deceiving. You see when I bought the rifle I lived in NY and adjustable stocks were a no-no as were threaded barrels, flash hiders... you know the drill. A lot of manufacturers pinned stocks to make them NY compliant but LMT went the extra mile and put a custom NY only (I assume) buffer tube in it that made it impossible to shorten.
The LMT as it was new:
Shortly after I moved here some forum members here helped me with threading the barrel. OK they did it for me, that's a step above just helping.
Step one of the de-NYing complete. Thanks again guys!
Still there was that buttstock. My AR-10 has a full rifle stock and as such it doesn't bother me. Same as my AK, both of which were also bought in NY. These were bought when NY was just like the 1994 ban for the rest of the country was before they totally lost their minds in January '13. Anyway I digress. The fake collapsing stock has always bugged me. The SOPMOD part itself was just missing the spring and plunger part which had been replaced with a screw.
I didn't see anywhere that sold those particular parts so I did actually buy a new B5 SOPMOD stock. I may actually try and buy a cheaper stock just for those parts later and sell the spare stock I'm not sure. The PSA store did not have the buffer tube or castle nut in stock so I ordered them from the web along with an armorers wrench and they arrived tonight so I could do the switch over.
I was a little concerned about the castle nut staking. They really staked this thing good.... twice!
As it turned out I was able to turn the nut off with a lot less force than I would have imagined it would take. As for that buffer tube... this is the sort of abomination that stupid rules cause manufacturers to put on rifles...
Here it is compared to the PSA 6 position milspec tube so you get the real idea of what they did:
They put a block inside so you could use a standard spring and buffer. I measured it and it's indeed the right length inside. Just not outside.
So, it's now all done except I need to re-stake the castle nut that is on it. So here she is, now fully functional as she was designed to be in the first place:
