Ok slowly piecing together parts for my boomershooter AR build I am looking at compensators/ muzzle breaks for the rifle I really don't know much about these devices in general (beyond what they do). So any recommendations on ones to look at and ones to stay away from (the AR is for 3gun use only open division)?

Thanks in advance.

since you metioned Open class, there are a few of the guys that run the JP recoil eliminator. It's probably the most effective brake i have ever used. If you don't want to go with that then like Rigsby said. Titan, Rolling Thundar. I have never used the Cooley so no input.

Titan is my preference for 3Gun if the handgaurd allows for it. On my shorty the barrel and the forearm were the same length, so the rear facing ports of the SJC were a no go. Put on a rolling thunder and it works fine.

I'm not trying hijack this thread, but I'm also looking at compensators and your answer to me may also help dfinin. Does anyone have experience with the Smith Enterprise Good Iron comp? I'm also looking at the JP comp.

The JP comp is the ugliest thing I've seen on the end of a barrel outside of a Barrette .50 cal.

Can't offer any functional advice though.

My Stag 3G is my first experience with a compensator other than the stock compensator/flash hider on military rifles. Okay, it's my second experience. My first experience with compensators was big diesel truck I used to drive, but that was compensating for something entirely different. I'm amazed that the comp on the Stag acutally pushes the muzzle down slightly, but I am looking for a comp that comes close to eliminating upward and downward movement. I'm sure it's a process of tuning and adjusting orientation of the comps, but which models should I be looking at for that?

The best comps for 3gun are the rolling thunder & sec titan. Seeking is very good as well, but titan & RT are the best.

David,

I recommend the Seekins as well. Talk to me at our monthly match next weekend and I will let you shoot a few rds to see what you think. I do have a RT that I could part with if you want to go that route.

Shooting style and ammo plays a part as well, which is why I guess alot of people are recommending different brakes.

Yes, but your truck, I'm sure is strictly used to haul plants, poppers, and ammo. Mine was used once to haul a quad, tow a car on a car hauler, and tote personal baggage, guns, and 300 pounds of ammo from Arizona to Missouri, then after that it was a 12 mpg daily driver.

LoganbillJ, I appreciate the offer to fire yours. I hate buying things that I haven't personally tried, which is one of the biggest reasons I went with the Stag 3G over the Rock River R3. A guy down here let me try his out. Well, that and the awesome commercial Stag Arms has for the 3G. That music and the poetic way in which Kalani Laker moves was really what did it. PM me a price on that RT if you would so I know how much I should bring. The fact is, anything at all will be a vast improvement over the carbine-length system and military standard compensator I've been using for right at 20 years.
