I am trying to decided between a standard gas block or an adjustable. I have never dealt with a weapon outside of the 249 SAW that had an adjustable gas system and I never messed with the gas system. Are they fairly user friendly or are they even really worth the extra expense?

I have adjustables on all my builds. I hate being overgassed. It really helps with the recoil as well.

Well after reading some reviews I went with a Syrac ordnance clamp on adjustable block.

If you get greedy with the gas and it gets cold you have a bolt action.

One of the gun guru's on here said to load one round, and shoot until the bolt locks open, then open it up another 1/2 round for a little cushion.

That's a good reference point but not all gas holes, ammo, temps etc are the same. A little cushion can turn into not enough cushion with the wrong combo of variables. I got DQ'd after such a combination for failing to safe a rifle I grounded after it was jammed up with a quintuple feed situation.

If you're using mulitle types of ammo, you'll have to tune it with the lowest power ammo you'll be using & then test each type.
I've never had a problem with my JP adj gas block. Set it & forget it.

Don't go cheap with the adjustable gas block.

To my fellow fire arms enthusiasts. I have reached a tough decision in my build. I am try to decide between the 15 inch Samson Evolution and 15 inch Troy Alpha. Any input is appreciated. Also if anyone has one of those said forends and is also shooting the double tap I would love to actually get a feel for them of you don't mind.

They're both equally great handguards.
I have the Troy on mine, but have handled the Samson and like both. The Troy is rougher/grippier than the Samson so be sure to check them both out to see what fits you best.

Troy sucks and Samson rules. Seriously. Scott and Kathy Samson are big supporters of 3 Gun, 3 Gun Nation, and they put up $25,000 for the ladies pro tour this year. They also both come out and shoots few major 3 gun matches every year. I support those who support us.

I wouldn't go that far but I do like the support Samson provides to the sport.
The quality is great in both of these products.

There must be a reason the colt, double star, and stag 3G rifles all use a Samson hand guard.

Been reading from the beginning of the post in December till now. Did you ever find the barrel? I got a Loather Walther Var Tac 223 Wylde with bolt a few weeks ago, nice barrel bolt match set and $379. I also got the JP Adjustable gas block from Nordic Components and as Dennishoddy said, that's how I was told to adjust the Adj. gas block. Also use the heavy bullet to confirm it works with 55gr and 69gr.. Shooters Connection for my JP LMOS BCG to work with the Adj. GB. I was told to use all the parts for it to work as a system. You can add one piece but all of the pie is best.

I also have a god forsaken Troy 15" hand-guard but I'm thinking of changing it out to the NEW Nordic Carbon Fiber 15" (was $145 but now $199 and out of stock) I have there Aluminum ($99.99 and 3 in stock).on my Grendel but since its a bench shooter, the weight doesn't matter to me on that one. Truthfully still not too heavy and shoots awesome..

As for Sampson, pretty nice too but I think Carbon is my next move......

Oh yeah I got a white oak barrel and a fail zero bcg. All I am dowb to is the foreend and magpul ubr butt stock I want.

Ok great.

I also have a Fail Zero on my 556 and they are nice. Easy to clean and always feel oily or slick. For the stock I have the A2 Buffer Tube with the ACE Skeleton Stock. I had the collapsible types and got rid of them but still have a Ergo F93 and it's too heavy. I really like the light weight bare bones.
