I want to be like everyone else on BS and own an AR-15! Looking at the plethora of possibilities only brings confusion.

What would be a good ,complete rifle for under $1K. I want iron sights. I don't want to have to buy extra things to make it complete.

Thanks

Build your own. Pick out all the exact components you want. You'll be able to build a prett bad-a rifle for around $1000. I'll put it together for you if you don't know how.

Its not to difficult. I've got the vise block, armor's wrench, as well as wrenches for MI and YHM type free float hand-guards. Let me know if you want any help Kevin, or we can just bs about duck hunting.

I would suggest using parts from Spikes tactical.
I currently have 2 Spikes AR's and have been very pleased with the quality of their products.

Three immediate offers of the use of tools and assistance with putting a rifle together to get a new AR owner into a gun. The gun culture kicks ass.

Check out the Brownells videos on building an AR step-by-step. There are good off-the-shelf ARs for under $1k but as these guys said, there's no substitute for building your own and getting to know the gun from the inside out. You might start with a LOKI receiver set. Good luck to you.

im building mine - going with Loki forged lower and upper - does anyone know if we can use Picket's charge for the FFL?

Right now, you can build a great AR rifle using a Loki upper (w/ boomershooter discount) and your choice of lower. It's what I'm recommending to my friends and it's what I plan on doing even though I just bought a LWRC M6A3 a few months ago for a ridiculous amount of money :( -mainly so I can have something lighter and not so "milspec" so I can start competing like all the other cool guys here, heh.

AR's are so addicting....

However, I do have a new AK to appease my appetite for a while before I start jonesing for a Loki.

The best AR out there under $1000 is made by Stag Arms. They have the model 1, 2, 2T and 4 that come with front and rear sights for a retail price under $1000. These guys just started sponsoring 3 gun nation and are putting together a 3 gun tram of factory sponsored shooters. One if which I think you will recognize. Here is the link.

You could also call Loki here in OK. I bet Erik could build you something for close to a grand.

thanks to everyone's generosity to help build a rifle. I would need your help. I known nothing about the AR-15. I've never even shot one yet.

Uppers and lowers? Not sure what this means in rifle terms. When I read this I think of pills or teeth.

I notice that on Gunbroker (etc.) they are oft listed as 5.56mm/.223. I know this has been covered before, but please retiterate. Can one shoot .223 in a rifle that only has 5.56 mm designated on the receiver?

It will be some time yet before the savings account is flush enough to afford the weapon. When it is time, I will ask for help in building the rifle. Until then, I got some learning to do.

Tally ho!

Kevin

You can shoot .223 in a 5.56 chambered rifle, but not the other way around.
Ask as many questions as you would like to, there are lots of folks on here that are more than willing to help you out with your build.

Uppers and lowers are just that. The upper part of the rifle, and the lower part. Google can get you a lot of pics of them.

What do you plan to shoot with the AR? That is the first thing you should decide. Also ask people if you can check out theirs ARs.

After that, I recommend you just buy it piece by piece. Then we can put it together.

Well I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think it matters what caliber is on the receiver (spikes lower receivers are about $80 from aimsurplus.com). When it comes to the barrel, I would recommend one that it is chambered in 5.56. The benefit to having the 5.56 chamber is that you can shoot both 5.56 and .223 in that barrel. But if you had a barrel chamber in .223 you would not want to shoot 5.56 through it!!

(spikes lower receivers are about $80 from aimsurplus.com).

That is a stripped lower, you would also need an LPK (lower parts kit) $55-$70, and a collapsible buttstock with buffer tube assembly (or you can get an old A2 buttstock)

The options are pretty much limitless. That is why you should try define what you will use the AR for.

Sounds like you need to be present in my garage when we do the LOKI build later this summer. You could learn a lot from some dummies. Lol!

You damn skippy it is. Cyrwus has the upper/lower in his safe. Immature pick it up Friday. BD is shipping the parts next week. It should be ready for auction mid-August

i agree with everybody else...build it yourself. palmetto state armory has a hell of a deal on lowers right now. stripped for $79. assembling the lower is so easy, okie-carbine can do it. and i have done it, umm, well it doesn't matter how many times, they all went to the bottom of the lake.

theres some good vids out there on arfcom to help. then just buy a complete upper to slap on it.
ar15s are like flashlights, you cant have just one. same thing with ak47s. they are like kittens, they are happier in pairs or groups.
