Anyone shoot AK or Ruger Mini-14?

Been looking at AK-101/103 and wondering if anyone here has much experience of shooting them in competition. I've heard the 7.62 AK's aren't really all that accurate past 100 yards. Wondering if the 5.56 version is any better, or if the inaccuracy thing was just inherent to all AK's? Also wondering what some of the better brands are for AK's? I've run across a few people that say it doesn't matter because they're all the same and others that say Saiga is the only way to go. I don't really know anything about AK's except their super reliable...

Ruger Mini-14's are something else I was looking at. They appear to be the grown up version of the Ruger 10-22, which I have a really like. I was thinking the tactical version that has all the rails and mounts on it might make for a good 3-Gun.

Any input on those would be appreciated. :)

I didnt know a AK was accurate past 50 yards :onthequiet:
I almost brought a lot of mini 14's but then always didnt and Im glad, Ar's just have too much going for them. They shoot a lot better and bits are far far cheaper even here a mini 14 mag costs 2 to 3 times as much as a ar mag.
Theres a guy in our club who couldnt justify the extra cost to buy a AR for 3 gun so he brought a target mini 14, now hes trying to sell it to buy a AR.

Now apart from MY opinion you could look at the results have a bit of a search about but you will always find that AR's are at the pointy end of the feild when it comes to winning shooting competitions

I have an Arsenal converted Saiga. The sgl 31. I like it. I use it in local practical rifle matches. I've beat a slew of ar's with it in those matches. The distances of targets are all close though. Irons on the ak leave something to be desired. Accuracy is decent, don't expect 1 MOA. 7.62x39 can probably give 2-3 MOA on a good day. 4-6 on a cheap rifle with crap ammo. 5.56 and 5.45 x 39 ak's will give more like 2 moa. better but not amazing. I like the ak's a lot, better than an ar even. However if you want to compete at a high level in 3 gun type matches the ar will be a much easier gun to do it with. More ergonomic, more accurate, more accessories, and less recoil. Not to mention lighter. Good luck and have fun.

I've owned a mini-14. fun and reliable. Not what I would want in a match though. The AK will make you happier than the mini.

Neither really offers the level of accuracy you're looking for unless you're strictly talking short range.
