Have had some pretty decent discussions on some of the "other" forums that I am a member of concerning this topic, wondering what might come of the same topic here. I'll start, when watching this show I wanna (and do quite frequently) scream at the TV. They do some neat things but sometimes I just have to shake my head while my 3yr old corrects their gun fopa's.

Real gunsmiths use lathes and mills. All I've seen these guys use are welders and angle grinders

From what I've seen of what they do on that show, I'll never send a dime to them. They don't seem to really know what they're doing, it seems like he's just guessing with most everything he does.

i havent watched this season yet, its still dvr'd. i watched some last season. its okay for entertainment purposes.

Dong usebthese guysb they are horrible. How do they not know that reducing the length and weight of a barrel could change recoil and rate of fire. They need to just stick with adding tapco parts to aks

I shoot and work on guns, I dont have the time or desire to sit on my ass and watch guns worked on and shot.

Pretty much the same here. I can't stand the hunting shows, as I actually hunt on areas that aren't high fence, and raced MX dirt bikes, and finally Three wheelers for 15 years. I love to race them, but won't waste my time watching them on TV.

I can't say that I have been impressed with the episodes I've seen. Seems like a "shade-tree" operation at best. If they were really noteworthy, they would already be known before the show. And waaaaaayyyy overpriced for the stuff they do. But, hey, if people are that gullible....

by no means am I defending red jackett f/a, they are pretty well known but I have to agree with the overpriced comment, It's rumored that this guy apprenticed under Tony Rumor of Tromix I cant swear to that but that is the rumor I've heard

true, I'm watching an episode now where Tony came in to help with a build.

You guys need to remember that it's a TV show and someone thinks what is shown will bring more viewers. Will has a couple good smiths working for him. Seeing someone flat-top a slide on a mill wouldn't keep the general public tuned in.
American Choppers started out to be a pretty good show about building bikes, then it turned into a soap opera. It's all about the ratings from the general populace.

The comment about a Japanese Type 38 rifle not having a safety ruined it for me. I am not a gunsmith nor have I ever played one on TV, but even I know better then that.

i have not watched the one with the arisaka but am shocked they had no knowledge of it.i at least thought they would stop the camera and wikipedia it.

I was totally floored when Vincent got his ass jumped by Will for asking about having a depth micrometer when chambering a barrel. Will said "this elephant dung is simple and there's no need to make it into a 3 day ordeal". Or something to that effect. That tells me right there he doesn't know squat about machining. And anyone can pick up a depth mic for about $30 in a pawn shop. You'd have thought Vincent was asking for a CNC lathe or something.

When I watch, its just to see what guns they are building. I think they kill these shows when they start writing scripts for them to follow.

Can ya say will is a shade tree gunsmith..... and not a good one at that, I think that he's more of a pryotechniques guy anyway..
