In 1887 Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the
University of Edinburgh, had this to say about the fall of the
Athenian Republic some 2,000 years prior: "A democracy is always
temporary in nature;
it simply cannot exist as a permanent
form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until
the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous
gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority
always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from
the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally
collapse over loose fiscal policy, (which is) always followed by a
dictatorship."

"The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the
beginning of history, has been about 200 years. During those 200
years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:

From bondage to spiritual faith;
From spiritual faith to great courage;
From courage to liberty;
From liberty to abundance;
From abundance to
complacency;
From complacency to apathy;
From apathy to dependence;
From dependence back into bondage."
The Obituary follows:

Born 1776, Died 2012
It doesn't hurt to read this several times.
Professor Joseph Olson of Hamline University School of Law in
St. Paul, Minnesota, points out some interesting facts concerning
the last Presidential election:

Number of States won by: Obama: 19 Romney: 29
Square miles of land won by: Obama: 580,000 Romney:
2,427,000
Population of counties won by: Obama: 127 million Romney: 143 million
Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by: Obama: 13.2 Romney: 2.1

Professor Olson adds: "In aggregate, the map of the territory
Romney won was mostly the land owned by the taxpaying citizens
of the country.

Obama territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in
low income tenements and living off various forms of government
welfare..."

Olson believes the United States is now somewhere between the
"complacency and apathy" phase of Professor Tyler's definition of
democracy, with some forty percent of the nation's population
already having reached the "governmental dependency" phase.

If Congress grants amnesty and citizenship to twenty million
criminal invaders called illegals - and they vote - then we can
say goodbye to the USA in fewer than five years.

Looking at those stats is crazy. I still am in shock that he is in office. Its like a bad dream

Several years ago I read a prediction that the US would evolve (devolve?) into 3 separate countries. Basically the east coast, midwest, and west coast. I thought it was bull, but....

And a guy I work with was surprised when I said I don't put too much hope in being able to retire comfortably in about 24 more years.

Thanks for ruining my day! Good piece! Although I disagree with the illegal visitors part. I've dealt with many of our Mexican visitors through work and building houses. All of those individuals worked just as hard as my ancestors that were given the chance to come through Ellis island to become citizens. It's the ones that won't work that already live here that I'm worried about.

Its just like anything. There are good people that aren't legally here and bad people. The good far outweigh the bad but the bad spoil the deal for them all.

While I agree with the premise, its a little like the "Cant believe everything you read on the internet" quote from Abraham Lincoln.

Didn't we throw out those royalist 236 years ago and again just few 36 years later?
The famous "why democracies fail" quotation is

"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by a dictatorship, then a monarchy."

Its earliest confirmed use is on page 12A of the Daily Oklahoman on December 9, 1951, which attributed it to Tytler. Later references to the quote specify that it is from the book, The Decline and Fall of the Athenian Republic, by Alexander Fraser Tytler. No record of that book has been found, nor does any other work by Tytler have this passage in it.[12] It seems that most of Tytler's work has been completely lost.[13]

The famous Fatal Sequence quotation, sometimes known as the Tytler cycle, is

"The historical cycle seems to be: From bondage to spiritual faith; from spiritual faith to courage; from courage to liberty; from liberty to abundance; from abundance to selfishness; from selfishness to apathy; from apathy to dependency; and from dependency back to bondage once more."

Its earliest confirmed use is by Henning Webb Prentis, Jr., President of the Armstrong Cork Company. It was during a speech entitled "Industrial Management in a Republic," delivered in the grand ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria at New York during the 250th meeting of the National Conference Board on March 18, 1943.
Prentis did not use the "fatal sequence" quotation in conjunction with the "why democracies fail" quotation. But they have later been published together and both attributed to Tytler, as in the queries column of American Notes & Queries in April 1979. Nobody can find any work by Tytler with the Fatal Sequence quotation, and it appears to be original to Prentis.[12]

So are you saying we aren't screwed or this guy didn't exist?

It doesn't matter if this guy exists or not, i doesn't take a rocket scientists to look at the way things are going to know this country is screwed. Maybe I should clarify, when I say "this country", I mean this country that our founding fathers put together. Some approve of the way the country is headed and find no problem with it.

Is America Screwed?

1) 16.7 trillion in debt and growing at 38,000 a second. Not counting 870 billion in college loans which only about 23% are actually paid back. Some how we have to pay 84 million baby boomers their SS with less people in the work force. 47 million people on food stamps. SS and college loans are not counted against the debt but we have to borrow money to pay for them!

2) QE3 printing money to help the economy or should I say the banks, 85 billion a month. Lets bring down the value of the dollar some more!

3) Bigger Government

4) State Government Union retirements. We the people can not afford to pay them 75% of their salaries plus medical.

5) New laws, healthcare and taxes put in place to prevent businesses the ability to operate in America.

6) Foreign aid paid to countries that hate us and the aid is only used for the leaders and military not the people.

7) A Government that thinks the Constitution is out dated.

8 ) A Government who believes a Christian or Religious person needs to be tolerant to peoples way of life. Although Religion which America was founded on has no place in Government or schools.

9) A Government without morales!

10) A Government who believes taking away Liberties will only help and protect the people.

You need to come visit me at my work and meet my Mexican visitors/residents. You'll see things a bit differently.
