One person was critically wounded after being accidentally shot at a gun shop in North Charleston.

The incident was reported about 5:15 p.m. on Cross County Road, about a mile north of Dorchester Road, at the Trader World Gun Shop.

The shop, just northwest of the Charleston International Airport, has an indoor shooting range.

"Officers are investigating an accidental shooting that happened on the firing range," police spokesman Spencer Pryor said.

Paramedics reported that the person's injury was life-threatening.

No further information about the incident, such as whether the shooting was self-inflicted, was immediately available.

Thoughts and Prayers going out to the injured person for a speedy recovery.

Wow. Wish the injured the best in recovery. I am surprised it does not happen more often, but am glad it does not.

STORY UPDATE

A man was taken to a hospital in critical condition Monday afternoon after apparently accidentally shooting himself at an indoor shooting range.

The incident happened about 3 p.m. at Trader World Gun and Indoor Range at 7163 Cross County Road in North Charleston.

The injured man, whose name was not available, was on the shooting range when his gun discharged into his chest, North Charleston police Lt. Del Hardee said.

The man was in critical condition when taken by EMS to Medical University Hospital, police said.

Hardee said a number of people were on the firing range when the incident happened, and investigators were getting statements from all of them. A small group of people could be seem outside the shop talking to police and filling out paperwork after the shooting.

There's been another update. They identified the gentleman, it sounds as though it was a very sad negligent discharge.

The man who accidentally shot himself Monday afternoon at a North Charleston gun shop has died, according to the police.

Benny Patterson, 60, of North Carleston died of gunshot wound to chest about 30 minutes after an accidental shooting at the gun shop.

Spencer Pryor, spokesman for the North Charleston Police Department, said that just after 5 p.m., Patterson was shooting on an indoor range at the Trader World Gun Shop when he turned his handgun to inspect it.

?He turned the handgun toward his person when it discharged, striking him,? Pryor said in a statement.

Patterson was taken to Medical University Hospital, where he later died. The shop is at 7163 Cross County Road, which is just northwest of the Charleston International Airport.

A witness said he shot himself in the chest with a .45-caliber Glock.

Most Glock handguns, referred to as ?safe-action pistols,? are not equipped with a manual safety. Rather, an internal mechanism that prevents a Glock from firing is disengaged when the trigger is pulled.

OK. I can understand that poor firearm handeling must have been involved in this, but i cannot figure out for the life of me how someone could do this accidentally. I have seen (and lived through) some bizzare and highly improbably shooting injuries, and the only thing i can figure it might be is a hang fire, or somehow he put his thumb in the trigger guard? Anyone else have thoughts on it?

He could have been fumbling with the gun in an attempt to clear a jam. It's possible he pulled the trigger while catching the gun after dropping it.

Yet another reminder to vigilantly follow the four rules.

I'd guess fumble and catch. The hang fire would have had to be a long one for him to bring it around fully towards his chest. The urge to stop a loaded handgun from hitting the floor is a strong one.

This is crazy! I must have left right before this happened. This is sad news, I feel for the family
