I was reading the other day about the color coordinated conditions of readiness that Jeff Cooper came up with all those years ago. In the article was a suggestion that the only time it’s acceptable to be in condition white is “in your own home, with the doors locked, alarm on, and dog at your feet.”

I’m sitting in my office right now, typing this post at my desk and I can tell you I’m definitely not in condition yellow; but I’m also not fully in condition white either. I generally stay in Condition yellow, always looking around for an exit, trying to assess anything that may cause trouble.
I've been assaulted a couple of times in the mall when walking with my wife, by my wife.

I'm continually "checking my 6" to see if there are threats coming up behind me. I can't help it if a pretty lady just walked by!
Its all about situational awareness :scout:

Sunday me and my wife went to watch a movie in lawton. Before the movie started a employee came in the theater and checked the exit door. This got me to thinking and looking around the theater at the three exit signs. It is the first time I have ever felt uneasy in a theater. All I could think about is what I could do in the case of an active shooter as I do not have a ccw. I moved my wife and I closer to the stairs. But honestly decided might be the last movie going we do for a while.

If you quit going to movies because of the Colorado shooting then I just don't know what to tell you. Knowing where the exits are is important but I want you to think about what's likely to happen. Active shooter is so far down the list its not even really funny. Having a gun on you is great, CC everywhere you can. But a fire is more likely to happen.

Hoe many of you guys have guns everywhere but no fire extinguisher?

Don't let these crazies alter your life! Continued normalcy is available to all of us if we are just aware of our surroundings and prepared.

Seriously, It just gets to be a habit after awhile, and you don't really notice that your checking out your surroundings, but you are constantly doing it.
In my situation, it came from military service and hunting. Both situations be it in the jungle, or in the oak woods, require constant attention to your surrounding for the slightest noise, motion, smells, or what ever is not supposed to be there. Something different.
Urban life, its not much different. Walking the mall/parking lots, looking for folks that are acting different, doing something odd, hanging out in strange areas, not dressed for the season (trench coat in summer), whatever.
Live life as normal, but always be looking. Before long your doing it and don't even know it.
