I've just started reloading 9mm. 1 out of every 5 or 6 rounds the bottom 3rd of the case swells and will not chamber all the way. I'm using a Dillon 550b. What could be causing this?

Thanks

Range brass? Or are you shooting a Glock reloading your own brass. Number one thing to do is get a case gauge, then process brass with something like a Lee Bulge Buster. Be sure to check every reload in case gauge. It's a simple go/no go. If you can't get one, take out your barrel and use it to gauge. Rounds should just plop right in. In you have the coin, I understand a roll sizer is pretty sweet for removing the Glock bulge.

BTW, welcome to the forum!

Some of my brass is from my Glock. Some is bought once fired. I was using my barrel as a gauge when I noticed the bulge. I'm gonna look into the roll sizer. Thanks for the info!

Lee crimp die is what you need. When I got my new reloader that is what all the guys I shoot with said I need to get.

I started having similar issues with my Dillon 550 and Dillon dies. Several on BS suggested filing off some of the bottom of the deprime/resizing die, and making certain it was adjusted as far down as possible without deflecting the shell plate. Result, my no go rate dropped to <0.5%. So I haven't touched the Lee Bulge Buster and FCD I purchased. You may want to try it before wasting the money like I did.

I have had this problem too, although not to the extent you have been having them, however they seem to come at the most inoppurtune time. I just ordered a lee undersized sizing die, I have read that this helps. Grinding off the bottom of the die sounds interesting. I have a spare rcbs die lying around, might give it a try.

I agree with bob on use your barrel as a case gauge
For 9mm ttown went down a similar road that I did, I wound up screwing my FL die in more and that corrected the bulge at the base problem, then went back and re ran the cases that I had segregated out because of bulge, they would then work fine this was for my Glock barrel
My STI .40 never liked the FL resizing die even when u put the die in the single stage press and cammed the hell out of it, empty cases never repeatedly just dropped in, I never liked the idea of filing or altering the surface of the base of the die, I am sure it would work just not my cup of tea yet.
I bought the egw U die and the cases would then chamber easily

Good luck

Does the U-die or FCD work on 9mm? For some reason I thought it was a tapered case and therefore not a good candidate compared to the .40. I was able to solve my issue, but just in case, guess I'm glad I have them.

I just got my lee crimp die in. It fixed my problem. Thanks for the tip!!

its undersized.even though it only goes down about as far as the shellplate, it will bend the brass inward, further down, because it is smaller in dia.

Once you go u die, you should make sure you are still getting a good belling of the case mouth by the powder die.

I just got my lee undersized 9mm die. After researching I found lee makes em for several brands. Lee's were in stock so I went with them directly. Over 500 rounds and not a one doesn't drop in and out of the case gauge smooth as silk! I'm a believer!

Same experience here. Once I started using the Lee factory crimp die my feeding problems went away.
So, on my Dillon 550, I need to replace the 4th station Dillon crimp die with the Lee FCD, and my ammo will be "more better"? My shooting will still suck, but sounds like I will have one less excuse to blame that on.

Personally, I use the entire Lee Deluxe pistol set (aside from the powder funnel) but yes I guess you could just replace the crimp die.

I'm not a fan of the Dillon Dies, I hate the freakin' snap decapper.
The Lee dies are what I use for all of my loading

The Lee full case sizing die at station 1 solved the problems with the 9mm for me. The .40 S&W still gives me fits. I have to use the bulge buster for it.

I'm on around 2500 rounds loaded since I picked up the lee undersized 9mm die for sizing and decapping and I've yet to get one that would drop in and out of the chamber checker perfectly! I'm still using my rcbs expander and rcbs seater/crimper. Best investment I ever made!
