So I have been thinking about building an AR rifle in the 7.62x39. I have been reading a lot about it but I dont have much faith in the internet, as KurtM said, the internet is full of people who can spend your money but know nothing. So anyone who has input on in this Id appreciate it. Im really looking for something in the AR family that is cheaper to shoot, as reliable if not more so, and offers more punch within the 300-400m range. Just curious if this is even an option to really consider seeing as I have and AR and an M1A. Any thoughts? (yes, I understand this seems contradictory, but I trust BS to not steer me wrong....please)

Anything like this maybe?

You know - not only do I love 7.62x39 and these posts call out to me. I had considered doing the same thing with my AR build and even the 5.45 - Jesse T even let me use his M&P in 5.45 for a 3 gun match. I know how you feel - it is hard to find good solid sources for a non conventional AR build. Jimmy Pickett who owns Pickett's Charge AKA Norman Automotive "not sure if they are still a sponsor" mentioned that he has gone through the experience of building one. He is a cool guy and I really enjoyed talking AKs with him when I was picking up my LOKI upper and lower.

I like the punch of the .30cal round, but the price of the 5.45 is shweet. So if I were to go that way, whats the best bet?

You should call Steve at Cold Hand Arms. He does a lot of this type of stuff.

AIM surplus has the 5.45x39 for 2 or more $129.95. I have 3 tuna cans and thinking about getting 3-4 more! I also want to make a ak-47 AR also. I think I am going to have one of my friends who is a armorer at Crane work it with me! He has built more M16s than we could ever consider.

Cheers!

Build one. Model 1 sales sells a 20" heavy barrel that's built by ER Shaw.

You might be able to get ER Shaw to make an 18" medium contour.

Order a 5.46x39 bolt from model 1 as well. The mags come from C Products. Model 1 carries them as well. The rest is all standard AR15 stuff. That cheap ammo is all corrosive so plan on giving it a bath after every trip to the range.

I think this is a great idea! A good friend of mine who is a Title 2 manufacturer (one of the big 5 manufacturers of ARs who's first name is Frank) will happily sell you all the parts you need to make one up, to include a bunch of broken bolts with locking lugs stripped off, and a crate of magazines that won't run, from all sorts of manufacturers like Colt DPMS C Products PRI and others. 7.62X39 is the heat in an AR platform because the case head is too big for the bolt face of an AR and the tapper of the case is too much for a standard type magazine to handle....but then again I already told you that.

For more "punch" in the mid range look to the 6.5 Gremlin, 300 Whisper/300 Blackout, Or since you have an M1A, quit playng with sissy guns! :85:

Putting "bigger" cartridges into the AR platform is like over-pumping your old air rifle...you thought you really had something, but you really didn't

Kurt, one of the great things about not being sponsored is having to pay for your own ammo...oh wait...I meant worst things...haha. Im just kidding, but Im really looking for a way to build a kit that I can pump rounds through and build familiarity with the weapon and be able to shoot without listening to the register cha-ching every time you know. I dont have the cash to burn through 5.56/308 like its cool. I might just build a 22 upper. Id love to shoot my M1A more, its my favorite rifle by far, just get an aching pain in my right ass cheek every time I do. >:( bahhhh, guess Ive been putting off buying my reloading gear long enough.

Well I don't get that much sponsored ammo, but what I do get is ammo for testing from several companies. For some reason they like my feed back, hence the "flashy" hard recoiling .40 I gave you to shoot. Don't think of it as free ammo, think of it as I am at work, cause sometimes it doesn't work well and I end up looking foolish...which I can do all on my lonesom. As for a cheap AR to shoot the 5.45X39 is an OK option, but they aren't great for reliability, but not too bad either. A .22 upper is the way to go. As for your reloader choice....well we need to talk about that as well. C YA Saturday.

Yessir we do! Im not gonna be able to shoot but I need to drop off my M&P and get you that compass and look at your caddies so Ill figure something out. See you tomorrow

It just So happens that I know if a forum doing a group buy on The best .22lr uppers out there from Nordic Components. Now if I could just remember the name of that forum. Oh yeah we are on it. Give me a shout today if you want one.

you said around XXX for the upper, I assume its ready to run out of the box minus magazines.
