Over the next couple of months I want to build a good rifle for my son John to use in 3Gun.

My budget is 2500 OTD including optic.

I'm totally open to suggestions.

JP lightweight barrel. Build it around that. Carbon fiber handguard of your choice. JP trigger. JP Low mass bolt carrier. Ace ultralight stock.

Tony I'm thinking magnification. I'll run the gun in club matches too. Those head shots Sunday were a joke for me even with my glasses.

I recommend a 1-6x, I started with a 1-4x & when I got my 1-6x it was like night & day.
I use the Leupold VX6 with a circle dot reticle & I really like it alot.

If your son is not super tall, you might go with a collapsible stock of some sort to get a shorter length of pull. Or there is the ACE entry stock.

Stag Arms Upper and Lower ;)
JP 16" light weight light contour mid length gas system
15" AP Customs carbon FF Tube, 12" might save so e weight especially since he probably can't reach to the end of it
Titan or rolling thunder comp since he's not a big 11 year old Wheaton arms makes a titanium comp that's ultra light. A few punches tha far out can make a big
AR Gold trigger or JP if it helps the budget
Burris Tac30 in a Warne mount
Ergo grip
Magpul adjustable stock as I think the fixed stocks are going to be too long for a year or two
JP low mass bolt carrier
Syrac, PRI or JP adjustable gas block

I know a guy that has a gun very close to this setup. Biggest difference is it has an ace ultra light stock and Samson hand guard. I'm pretty sure I could talk him into letting John try it out at the pro series match.

That Samson handguard is pretty light too.
That rifle would be awesome with a collapsible stock

I might have an AP carbon tube I want to get rid of. Let me look.
Not to hijack and obviously Jeff would have first dibs, but I'd be interested in the AP if Jeff doesn't want it, Jesse.
